Asia Institute
The importance of Asia and the Middle East continues to grow at significant pace. The Asia Institute strives to provide leadership in the study of the rich intellectual, legal, political, cultural and religious traditions of these vital regions. A number of projects probe Asia-Australian relations, the lives and cultures of Asian migrants to Australia, CALL (computer aided language learning), endangered languages, dialectology, modern history and various forms of Asian popular culture.

The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies was formed in 2011. It comprises the programs of History, History and Philosophy of Science and Philosophy. It also manages the Centre for Classics and Archaeology, the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and the Centre for Jewish History and Culture. Areas of expertise cover diverse times, places and themes – and reflect the latest developments in historical research and vocational practice.

School of Languages and Linguistics
The School of Languages and Linguistics is one of the greatest Language and Linguistics research centres in Australia, and indeed one of the finest in the our part of the world. Home to the Language Testing Research Centre and the Research Unit on Multilingualism and Cross-Cultural Communication, the School boasts world-class facilities held together by a total of over 100 researchers. These include staff and students, as well as postdoctoral researchers and research fellows.

School of Social and Political Sciences
The School of Social and Political Sciences provides a positive environment for both students and staff to engage in cutting-edge research across Political Science, Criminology, Sociology, Anthropology, Development Studies and Social Theory. Researchers benefit from a dynamic and rewarding environment comprising reading groups, seminars, conferences and access to postgraduate journals, as well as involvement with the Centre for Public Policy and Melbourne Consulting and Custom Program (MCCP).

Message from the Director
The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest and most dynamic school of its kind in Australia. We offer 12 graduate programs – from the world‐leading Executive Master of Arts to the Master of Art Curatorship – and each year we teach and supervise over 1,600 of the world’s brightest graduate students.
Our Graduate School aims to integrate the arts and humanities into the leadership of contemporary society. We achieve this objective through the School’s innovative teaching and award‐winning research.
Our programs will enhance your skill set and hone your intellectual capacities, ready to make a difference in the world. Our graduates go on to find success in a range of careers – from the private sector and government to the social economy, media and communications.
Our brand new, specialised facilities in the heritage‐listed Old Arts Building include wireless internet, hi‐tech collaborative learning spaces and video conference facilities, as well as our graduate lounges and informal learning spaces.
