| UpdatedThe Australian Sugar Milling Council says the federal government's Code of Conduct has the potential to derail a draft contract between Wilmar and QSL, which had been 'on track' to be finalised within weeks. The council's CEO, Dominic Nolan, says millers were 'pawns' in a political game and the timing was ironic given the government's intervention was announced only one day after the Productivity Commissioner recommended similar provisions in Queensland law be repealed.

Call traffic to the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority's office in Mackay and freecall number (1800 623 946) has been lower than expected, but that was due largely to conditions on the ground. QRAA regional co-ordinator Craig Turner said applications for concessional loans were not time critical and were available for the next two years, and officers were ready and able to assist as producers calculated their losses and worked through the process.

The tabling of the Productivity Commissioner's wide-ranging report into agricultural legislation has angered the peak sugar lobby group, Canegrowers, after it concluded there was no evidence of market failure or abuse of monopoly power in the sugar industry ... a central plank of the argument for Queensland's (Real Choice in Marketing) sugar laws and a federal code of conduct. The Queensland Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne has indicated he will be guided very closely by the recommendations, particularly now a provision in the new laws has been ruled 'unconstitutional'. But Paul Schembri says repealing the laws would see the industry "descend into chaos".
