Panos Institute Southern Africa (PSAf), with support from Hivos Southern Africa, is conducting a monthly content analysis to monitor the media’s coverage of women in Zambia.

The initiative is part of the Women Empowered for Leadership (WE4L) project, in which PSAf is a partner, implementing to increase the positive public image, credibility and visibility of women leaders in Zambia.

The heavy focus on technical aspects of renewable energy projects tends to overlook the vital gender aspects that can make or break the uptake of projects. In many cases, energy projects are treated as gender neutral based on the assumption that energy bottlenecks and solutions impact men and women in similar ways. 

Even though progress has been made in increasing the participation of women in politics in Zimbabwe, women's participation in government at all levels, from the local to the national, remains extremely low.

Open contracting is one of the most exciting areas in modernizing government, fighting corruption, reforming markets and fostering business innovation and entrepreneurship. Better, smarter and fairer government contracting will have a huge impact on citizens’ lives everywhere. 

Malawi has put a final legal nail on the coffin of child marriages by making a historic amendment to the Constitution to fully outlaw child marriage.

The legal development followed more than fifteen years of undaunted advocacy that eventually resulted in Malawi's President, Peter Mutharika, signing the Marriage and Family Relations Bill into law in 2015, raising the minimum age for marriage from 14 to 18.

The vast majority of women work in informal sectors, and we are seeing an increasing feminisation of labour migration, both of which raise opportunities as well as challenges for women’s economic empowerment. With this year's theme, Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work, the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61) is the moment to give voice to migrant women in domestic work and women at the low end of value chains, like horticulture.

On International Women's Day 2017, Hivos celebrates the achievements of our programmes and partners in driving change for women and helping accelerate gender parity across the world. Together we are creating a gender inclusive green society, where women and men have equal access to – and control over - renewable energy and sufficient, nutritious and affordable food.

Young people at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) expressed dismay at the lack of funding opportunities to scale up their renewable energy innovations.

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Zimbabwe have been facing huge challenges due to limited funding and a lack of new, creative and innovative strategies to address longstanding problems that inhibit the enjoyment of human rights among citizens in the country.

As part of a process of becoming a fully independent organisation, the Hivos South Africa office will cease operating under the Hivos Foundation and will change its name to Hlanganisa Institute for Development SA.
