IU Southeast Librarian and New Roots leaders Melanie Hughes wins IU's Regional Grand Challenges $25,000 award to unite students to spread food justice. Read about it here: Friday April 28th, 2017 Congratulations to U of L graduating senior Kelsey Voit for earning 1st place for her undergraduate thesis at the University of Louisville on the subject of Collective Liberation in regards to food justice, utilizing New Roots, Louisville Grows and the Louisville Food Coop Movement as examples. "We're very blessed at New Roots to be working toward something very positive," said Moskowitz, who added that a majority of the organization's leadership is African American women. Sunday, March 5th, 2017 New Roots Director Karyn Moskowitz and Chef leader Meghan Levins from Monnik Beer Company will be at the cookbook and digital media awards ceremony for the International Association of Culinary Professionals at the Louisville Palace to receive the “Richard Sax Food Action Grant” in the amount of $5,000 from The Culinary Trust. This grant is reserved for non-profits working on innovative, high impact programs focused on anti-hunger in the host city of the International Association of Culinary Professionals annual conference. The Culinary Trust wrote: "We believe that the New Roots is doing outstanding work and trust the money will give you a significant leg up for fundraising for the 2017 New Roots markets." New Roots Receives National Recognition As a result of Karyn's and Amber's participation in the "Just Food?" conference at Harvard University the weekend of March 28, New Roots was chosen by the Oakland, CA based Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) as one of six models in the country worthy of national recognition and possible scale up! On April 18, UCS Policy Associate Amelia Moore and five other food justice representatives from Memphis, Oakland and other cities, will visit Louisville. Monday, April 13, 2015
Youth Food Justice Summit In partnership with the Bellarmine University Food Advocacy Club, New Roots organized the first annual Youth Food Justice Summit. The Summit was a forum for local high school and college students to discuss the issues that plague our food system and the unique ways that youth can tackle these problems. Photo Exhibit On Display Thanks to the hard work of the duPont Manual High School Photojournalism class and its teacher, Ms. Liz Palmer, the “Health Comes From Your Roots” photo exhibit is now on display at the Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center, 234 Amy St. The gallery features beautiful images from Fresh Stop Markets and food justice classes. Strawberry Festivals May 20 & 22 The Strawberry Jamm is the only festival of its kind in the city of Louisville. This will be the third annual festival in Shawnee (on 5/22) and the inaugural Shively Strawberry Festival (on 5/20). All kinds of strawberry dishes will be served, including chocolate-covered strawberries, gluten-free strawberry shortcake, strawberry salsa, and strawberry kale salad.
