'Millions, not thousands': Midland Lotto winners' $4.2 million prize confusion

  • 162 reading now

A struggling family from Midland has had the shock of a lifetime after finding out they pocketed millions, not thousands, in the state's second Saturday Lotto Superdraw.

The family bought the Division One ticket at the Canning Vale Newsagency and originally thanked them for what they believed was $420,000 worth prize money but they were wrong.

What happens when you win lotto?

It's a dream for many but only a handful of lucky people will get to experience the process of what happens if you come across those winning numbers.

"We had to sit them down and explain they'd actually pocketed $4.2 million," Lotterywest spokeswoman Pina Compagnone said.

"They immediately broke down before the husband turned to the wife and said they could now afford to pay their overdue power bill."

Ms Compagnone said the husband purchased the ticket on his way home from work as a cleaner and picked the six winning numbers based on a combination of family birthdates and other special occasions.

"We've been really struggling to make ends meet," he said.

"I don't know what we'll spend the money on but I can tell you we'll spend it wisely."
