Alfa Romeo bursts into flames in busy Melbourne intersection

  • 20 reading now

A car spectacularly caught fire during Melbourne's peak hour rush on Monday, causing long traffic delays on the Eastern Freeway.

The Alfa Romeo was engulfed by flames about 6pm on the inbound corner of Wellington Street and Alexandra Parade, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.

Footage of the blaze showed smoke coming from the car's engine before it burst into flames just five minutes later.

Firefighters contained the blaze, which gutted the car, within minutes, but traffic delays continued for nearly an hour after.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

But traffic ground to a half on Alexandra Parade, while inbound motorists experienced long delays on the Eastern Freeway.

By 7.30pm, traffic had returned to normal.
