The story of the Lipizzaner and the Lipica Stud Farm begun in 1580. On May 19th 1580 the Habsburg Archduke Charles II, son of the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand I, purchased the Lipica estate from the Bishop Nicolo' de Coret. Thus the mansion and the estate became the foundation of the future imperial royal stud farm.
This day counts as the date of establishment of the Lipica Stud Farm and as the date of the beginning of breeding the Lipizzaner horse breed. We traditionally celebrate it as the Day of the Lipizzaner. This year the celebration will take place on Sunday, May 21st.
