How stupid can you get? Car drives through red light right in front of a police vehicle

  • 74 reading now

Driving through a red light is bad enough, not to mention potentially deadly. But driving through a red light directly in front of a marked police car is even worse.

Police have released footage of the moment a Perth driver did just that.

Driver runs red light in front of police

A driver takes off early and drives through a red light right in front of a police car.

The footage, which was captured by a fixed speed and red light camera, shows a small white vehicle in the left lane and a marked police car in the right lane at a set of traffic lights.

Despite the lights being red, the white car takes off slowly through the intersection but luckily no other cars are coming the other way.

The lights turn green moments later and the police car takes off to pull the car over.

The bizarre and potentially fatal incident happened just before 11pm last Thursday at the intersection of Mirrabooka Avenue and Ravenswood Drive in Nollamara.

The driver of the white car, an 18-year-old woman, was stopped by police and spoken to.

She will receive an infringement notice for driving through the red light, an offence which carries a $300 fine and three demerits.

No doubt it could have cost her much more than that.

"It is alleged she had a moment of inattention – stopped at the light but took off before it was green," police spokesman Andrew Maher said of the incident.

Inattention was a factor in 28 fatal crashes in WA last year.

Late last year WAtoday published dashboard camera footage which showed two cars running through a set of red lights on Wanneroo Road.

The footage showed the first car - a grey Mitsubishi Magna - flying through the Reid Highway bridge intersection at high speed despite the red signals.

Moments later a second car - a red Jeep covered with company branding -  creeps into the intersection and stops midway.
