Malerisch schmiegen sie sich an die Hänge und prägen das Bild der Stadt. Männer laufen mit nacktem Oberkörper durch die Gegend. Die Temperatur ist bei 20ºC. Für die kälteresistenten Neufundländer ist Hochsommer. Im Hafen fallen die schweren Eisbrecher des Küstenschutzes auf. Im Frühjahr verirrt sich manchmal ein Eisberg aus Grönland hierher. In den letzten Jahren sind es aber weniger geworden. Außerdem ist St. John's Anlaufhafen für die Versorgungsschiffe für die Ölförderplattformen vor den Küsten Neufundlands.
