Turkmenistan (i/tɜːrkˈmɛnᵻstæn/ or i/tɜːrkmɛnᵻˈstɑːn/; Turkmen: Türkmenistan/Түркменистан, pronounced [tyɾkmeniˈθtan]) is a country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west.
Turkmenistan has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries. In medieval times, Merv was one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road, a caravan route used for trade with China until the mid-15th century. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1924, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR); it became independent upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Turkmenistan possesses the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas resources. Most of the country is covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert. Since 1993, citizens have received government-provided electricity, water and natural gas free of charge.

This is a Flight review of Turkmenistan Airlines Flight T5 402 and T5 647 from Paris CDG to Bangkok BKK through Ashgabat airport (ASB). I paid 239€ for this flight and booked it 3 weeks ahead. Overall the flight with Turkmenistan Airlines was a very good experience, which was quite a surprise to be honest given that I had to google the name of the company before booking the flight to check their ratings. This is the reason why I decided to make a review with the footage I shot during the trip. I also included a "How to" section to get from Bangkok airport to the city center. The first flight was on a Boeing 737. Good leg room but no tv or any entertainment. The crew was really nice and professional and the food was good (which was a pleasant surprise given the price of the flight) The ...
Voice and effects Global oil prices and regional instability are damaging Moscow's hopes that Caspian Sea oil pipeline revenues may help its crippled economy. Russia's already weak economy has been hit more than most by the global financial crisis. Millions of angry workers are now taking part in nationwide protests against unpaid wages, job losses and soaring inflation. VOICE-OVER: Baku - the capital of Azerbaijan - and the fulcrum of the next great oil boom - or bust. Estimates of the Caspian Sea region's oil reserves range from 50 billion barrels to two hundred billion. That's a lot of black gold. Everybody wants a piece of the action. In fact, the Caspian Sea region's oil rush has been nicknamed the new "Great Game" - the term coined for the 19th-ce...
President Park Geun-hye hosted the president of Turkmenistan, who′s on a state visit to Korea this week. In their second meeting since President Park′s trip to the Central Asian country last year, the two leaders focused on expanding cooperation in Turkmen infrastructure and plant construction projects. Choi You-sun reports. Turkmenistan holds the world′s fourth-largest natural gas reserves and there appears to be great potential for Korean firms to win infrastructure projects in the Central Asian country. There are three main deals in the pipeline. Following up on agreements from a leaders′ summit last June, a Korean consortium and the Turkmen government have agreed to a one-billion-dollar project to build a facility to eliminate sulfur from petroleum products made at a Turkmen oil refin...

Turkmenistan has a unique and remarkable history. Traditionally a nomadic people, Turkmen are descended from several separate tribes or clans, each speaking a different dialect and with its own style of dress.
