KR 1000 titan: KUKA's muscle man
Mannstaedt GmbH is using six of KUKA's heavy-duty robots to stack steel beams in an impressive display of robotic brawn - carrying up to 2.5 tons at a time.
Mannstaedt is headquartered in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and produces special beams manufactured to customer specifications. The steel beams, which are used in automotive and port construction, reach a weight of 2.5 tons and a length of up to 26 meters. Thus, the first challenge was that the handling of these very heavy and irregularly shaped steel beams was not possible with one robot. To solve this challenge, Mannstaedt employed six KUKA KR 1000 titan robots.
Thanks to the robot-based automation, Mannstaedt is no longer limited to 16 meter long beams and can handle the full required length of 26 meters. Only by using six robots is this possible. The heavy-duty robots are highly accurate and provide incredible repeatability even while handling such large, awkward loads.
"The system is an absolute asset. We can produce faster and more flexibly with simpler methods," says superintendent Marcus Haas of Mannstaedt GmbH. His company has significantly increased business with the new system and it has immediately translated into an enlarged product portfolio.

KUKA partner Eugen Riexinger GmbH & Co. KG has developed a fully integrated, automated solution for the milling of huge plastic pipes using KUKA KR QUANTEC robots with other equipment, and put this solution into operation at its customer's production facility in Wales for milling Weholite pipes measuring up to 3.5 meters in diameter.
Plastic components, for example for underground pipelines, are a specialty of the Finnish company Uponor Infra. With its product Weholite, the company has developed a patented solution for manufacturing plastic pipes several meters in length and up to 3.5 meters in diameter. These oversized pipes are used for such applications as gravity-based drainage systems, dewatering, subterranean canals, retaining basin systems and low-pressure applications.
Weholite pipes boast all of the technical advantages of full-wall PE pipes, but are lighter, react flexibly to earth movements, and can be more quickly and easily installed thanks to the high degree of prefabrication. Eugen Riexinger GmbH & Co. KG in Bad Liebenzell has developed a fully integrated, automated solution for the milling of the huge pipes at the factory of Weholite licensee Asset International Ltd. in Newport, South Wales. For this purpose, KUKA supplied not only the KUKA 120 R2700 extra HA robot, but also the KL 1500-3 T linear unit, two MG 360 KUKA servomotors for the external rotational axis and the KUKA CNC controller. “This is our pilot project for robot-based automation,” explains Graham Bennett, Operation Manager at Asset International.

KUKA
KUKA is a German manufacturer of industrial robots and solutions for factory automation. The company name, KUKA, is an acronym for Keller und Knappich Augsburg.
History
The company was founded in 1898 in Augsburg, Germany, by Johann Josef Keller and Jacob Knappich. At first, the company focused on house and street lights, but soon expanded to other products (welding equipment and solutions; big containers), to become the market leader in communal vehicles in Europe by 1966. Keller & Knappich GmbH merged with part of Industrie-Werke Karlsruhe AG to become Industrie-Werke Karlsruhe Augsburg Aktiengesellschaft, eventually KUKA for short.
In 1973, KUKA created its own industrial robot FAMULUS. At this time, the company belonged to the Quandt group. However, in 1980, the Quandt family withdrew and a publicly owned firm was established. In 1995, the company was split into KUKA Robotics Corporation and KUKA Schweißanlagen (now KUKA Systems), now both subsidiaries of KUKA AG. The company is a member of the Robotics Industries Association (RIA), of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) and of the German engineering association VDMA. Today, KUKA concentrates on solutions for the automation of industrial manufacturing processes.

The heavy-duty robots are highly accurate and provide incredible repeatability even while handling such large, awkward loads.
"The system is an absolute asset. We can produce faster and more flexibly with simpler methods," says superintendent Marcus Haas of Mannstaedt GmbH. His company has significantly increased business with the new system and it has immediately translated into an enlarged product portfolio.

Weholite pipes boast all of the technical advantages of full-wall PE pipes, but are lighter, react flexibly to earth movements, and can be more quickly and easily installed thanks to the high degree of prefabrication. Eugen Riexinger GmbH & Co. KG in Bad Liebenzell has developed a fully integrated, automated solution for the milling of the huge pipes at the factory of Weholite licensee Asset International Ltd. in Newport, South Wales. For this purpose, KUKA supplied not only the KUKA 120 R2700 extra HA robot, but also the KL 1500-3 T linear unit, two MG 360 KUKA servomotors for the external rotational axis and the KUKA CNC controller. “This is our pilot project for robot-based automation,” explains Graham Bennett, Operation Manager at Asset International.

KG has developed a fully integrated, automated solution for the milling of huge plastic pipes using KUKA KR QUANTEC robots with other equipment, and put this solution into operation at its customer's production facility in Wales for milling Weholite pipes measuring up to 3.5 meters in diameter.
Plastic components, for example for underground pipelines, are a specialty of the Finnish company Uponor Infra. With its product Weholite, the company has developed a patented solution for manufacturing plastic pipes several meters in length and up to 3.5 meters in diameter. These oversized pipes are used for such applications as gravity-based drainage systems, dewatering, subterranean canals, retaining basin systems and low-pressure applications.
Weholite pipes boast all of the technical advantages of full-wall PE pipes, but are lighter, react flexibly to earth movements, and can be more quickly and easily installed thanks to the high degree of prefabrication. Eugen Riexinger GmbH & Co. KG in Bad Liebenzell has developed a fully integrated, automated solution for the milling of the huge pipes at the factory of Weholite licensee Asset International Ltd. in Newport, South Wales. For this purpose, KUKA supplied not only the KUKA 120 R2700 extra HA robot, but also the KL 1500-3 T linear unit, two MG 360 KUKA servomotors for the external rotational axis and the KUKA CNC controller. “This is our pilot project for robot-based automation,” explains Graham Bennett, Operation Manager at Asset International.
