Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). A gas mixture would contain a variety of pure gases much like the air. What distinguishes a gas from liquids and solids is the vast separation of the individual gas particles. This separation usually makes a colorless gas invisible to the human observer. The interaction of gas particles in the presence of electric and gravitational fields are considered negligible as indicated by the constant velocity vectors in the image. One type of commonly known gas is steam.
The gaseous state of matter is found between the liquid and plasma states, the latter of which provides the upper temperature boundary for gases. Bounding the lower end of the temperature scale lie degenerative quantum gases which are gaining increasing attention. High-density atomic gases super cooled to incredibly low temperatures are classified by their statistical behavior as either a Bose gas or a Fermi gas. For a comprehensive listing of these exotic states of matter see list of states of matter.
A gas chamber is an apparatus for killing humans or animals with gas, consisting of a sealed chamber into which a poisonous or asphyxiant gas is introduced. The most commonly used poisonous agent is hydrogen cyanide; carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide have also been used. Gas chambers were used as a method of execution for condemned prisoners in the United States beginning in the 1920s and continues to be a legal execution method in three states. During the Holocaust, large-scale gas chambers designed for mass killing were used by Nazi Germany as part of their genocide program, and also by the Independent State of Croatia at the Jasenovac concentration camp. The use of gas chambers in North Korea has also been reported.
Gas chambers have been used for capital punishment in the United States to execute death row inmates. The first person to be executed in the United States by lethal gas was Gee Jon, on February 8, 1924. An unsuccessful attempt to pump poison gas directly into his cell at Nevada State Prison led to the development of the first makeshift gas chamber to carry out Gee's death sentence.

Several times friends and family from outside the US asked me to explain a gas pump in the US for their rental cars. Unlike other countries you don't pay AFTER you bought gas - you pay BEFORE you buy gas. If you have a credit card things are much easier: swipe it at the pump, enter a zip code: done. If you pay cash, you can walk into the store and ask for $20 (or any other amount) for pump number [insert your pump number here].

Over the past few decades, the U.S. has been increasingly dependent on imports to meet its growing hunger for energy. But technological advances have now led to a huge surge in domestic output - and the U.S. is now the world's largest natural-gas producer. And the impact of this is being felt not just domestically but across the globe. As part of a special series on America's energy revolution - Tom Ackerman reports from Texas.
U.S. Army Soldiers from the 7th Infantry Division undergo training with CS gas, also known as tear gas. They enter the gas chamber to gain confidence that their masks will protect them. Then they take off their masks while in the chamber for a firsthand experience of what CS gas is like. Film Credits: SGT Chad Guthrie
Octane Rating - RON vs MON vs AKI. Often people ask "Why does the US have such low octane gas at the pumps?" They state this assuming European fuels have a significantly higher octane, when in fact it simply comes down to how we label our fuels. Most countries show the RON, or Research Octane Number. In the US, as well as a few other countries, we show the AKI, or Anti-Knock Index, which is the average of both the RON and MON, or Motor Octane Number. The US Senate Intelligence Committee released video footage showing victims of an alleged Syrian nerve gas attack on Saturday. The video was shown during a classified briefing to members of the Intelligence Committee on Thursday as part of the Obama administration's attempt to drum up congressional support for a limited military strike against Syria. The footage was filmed by Syrians and had previously been publicly made available on Youtube and other websites, but was confirmed as authentic by the Central Intelligence Agency. The horrifying images show Syrian men, women and children struggling to breathe and convulsing. They are the apparent victims of nerve gas poisoning. The graphic images have been held up by US Secretary of State John Kerry as proof positive the Assad regime used ...

Deep under the eastern Mediterranean lies the largest natural gas basin ever found on Europe's doorstep. But the gas fields often coincide with disputed borders between rival nations. Our reporter Marine Pradel investigated this lucrative resource, which everyone wants a piece of. The billions of cubic metres of natural gas discovered in recent years off Israel, Egypt and Cyprus form what is now called the "Levantine Basin", the largest natural gas reservoir within easy reach of Europe. The first major deposit, known as Tamar, was discovered in 2009 off the coast of Haifa, Is...
Pump Fiction | Originally broadcast November 2, 2012 The price for premium gas blends is as much as 15 cents more per litre than regular gas. Gas companies make the pitch that premium's better for your car. While it's true that some car makers recommend putting premium fuel in their high-end models, what about most of us who drive regular cars? (Visit: http://www.uctv.tv) The new abundance of natural gas provides energy options for America, including clean electric power. Oil production has increased, reducing the dependence of the US on imported petroleum. Both benefits come with the challenge of managing the environmental impact of new oil and gas development in the US. This talk discusses the way shale gas and oil are created and produced, and the latest choices now available for generating energy in the United States. Recorded on 2/7/2015. Station grey
Are you still waiting
For the children
To tumble away?
Walk us through
Fields undivided
Feel the weightless
Return back to you
Down in the valley
I've not lost a thing
Down here in the valley
Where the mission bells ring
Two by two
The lights shine
In the orchard
Ask me why I'd
Stand in for you
And I once knew
The feel of a body
Satisfied, oh so satisfied
When nobody's watching
Will you please be kind?
When nobody's watching
Will it be your way or mine?
Station grey
Are you still waiting
For the children
To tumble away?
Down in the valley
I've not lost a thing
