Ellis Lane is a suburb of the Macarthur Region of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia in Camden Council.
The area now known as Ellis Lane was originally home to the Gandangara people of the Southern Highlands although the Muringong, southernmost of the Darug people, were also known to inhabit the area. In 1805, wool pioneer John Macarthur was granted 5,000 acres (20 km²) at Cowpastures (now Camden). Ellis Lane is still primarily a rural locality.
Ellis Lane lies in the south ward of Camden Council, currently represented by Chris Patterson (who is also the Mayor of Camden), Eva Campbell and Fred Whiteman. It sits within the state electorate of Camden, represented by Labor's Geoff Corrigan, the former Mayor of Camden, and the federal electorate of Macarthur, represented by Liberal's Pat Farmer, the former ultra-marathon runner. Centennial Lane is a street off Ellis Lane and is a part of the Ellis Lane Suburb
At the 2011 census, there were 808 residents in Ellis Lane. The most common ancestries in Ellis Lane were English 33.0%, Australian 27.3%, Irish 10.2%, Scottish 6.6% and Italian 4.3%. The top responses for religious affiliation were Catholic 37.9%, Anglican 31.8%, No Religion 8.9%, Uniting Church 5.3%, and Presbyterian and Reformed 3.2%. School Education (8.1%) was the major industry of employment and other major industries included Building Installation Services 4.9%, Medical Services 3.6%, Land Development and Site Preparation Services 2.7% and Residential Building Construction 2.2%. The median household weekly income was $1,916, a lot higher than the national median of $1,234. In Ellis Lane, 100% of the dwellings were separate houses.
James Ellis may refer to:
James Cole Ellis (16 September 1843 – 7 July 1930) was an Australian politician.
Ellis was born in Jersey and migrated to Victoria in 1854 and moved to New South Wales in 1857. He became a major ship-owner in Newcastle and acquired waterfront property in Pyrmont in Sydney. He married Maria Kramer in 1863 and they had one daughter and six sons.
In 1882, Ellis was elected as a member for Newcastle in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and held the seat until 1889. He was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1891, but resigned in 1894 to successfully contest Newcastle West, which he held until 1895.
Ellis married Anne Johnson in 1922. He died in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra.
James "Jimmy" Ellis (15 March 1931 – 8 March 2014) was a Northern Irish actor and stage director with a career stretching over sixty years.
Originally a stage actor and director in Northern Ireland, he moved to London in the early 1960s. After gaining recognition in Great Britain through the Z-Cars (1962–78) police series on BBC1, he appeared in many other television and film roles. He was also a translator.
Ellis was born in Belfast and attended the Methodist College Belfast and later studied at Queen's University Belfast and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He began to act with the Belfast-based Ulster Group Theatre in 1952. He first appeared in a revival of the Louis D'Alton play,They Got What They Wanted (1947). Ellis became established as the company's young male lead in such plays as April in Assagh, where he was cast as McFettridge (1954), Is the Priest at Home? as O'Grady (1954), and The Diary of Anne Frank as Peter van Daan (1957).
