Welcome to AIATSIS Library's updated and expanded online collection about Indigenous Australian war service.  We have hosted Garth O’Connell’s  ground-breaking and popular website, Indigenous Australians at War, since 2008. We have now added to the site an illustrated reading list from the Boer War to the present time,  information which can assist with researching your family’s military history, a section on Women and War and some interesting links.

The war effort at home in Australia during the Great Wars is well documented. The war effort at home of Indigenous Australians is lesser known.  We have included photographs which tell this story. Many of the books in the reading list also tell the stories of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contributions at home during the Great Wars.

AIATSIS Library would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander warriors, men and women past and present, from the Freedom Fighters to those who have served and are serving today in the Australian Defence Force.
