The Maningrida Mirage newsletters
One of the treasures of the Library of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies is the collection of community newsletters from all around Australia. These newsletters document cultural, political and social issues, activities and interests from the 1960s to the present. Through this web site the Library is making a selection of these newsletters available online. We currently have available the Maningrida Mirage Newsletters from 1969 to 1974.
The Maningrida Mirage was produced by the Maningrida community from September 1969 until October 1974 with just under 250 issues being produced. Other local newspapers followed - the Gabalgu Jurra, Manayingkarirra Djurrung and Manayingkarirra Djurran Janguny.
The Newspaper hoped to, "develop community spirit by bringing news and information about what was happening in Maningrida and the new rural settlements" (issue1) and to look beyond to see Maningrida's place in the development of Arnhem Land generally.
