An explosion at a barbecue has left a family with severe burns at a Belanglo State Forest picnic area, north-east of Goulburn.
At 12.30pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to Dalys Road, following reports of the blast.
Police officers from the Hume Local Area Command attended and found three adults and two children with severe burns.
Inspector John Klepczarek from Bowral Police Station said the family was trying to light a fire when the blast occurred.
"They put some sort of accelerant on the barbecue and it all went up at once like a big ball of fire," he said.
"We are not sure yet why they did it, but it appears the family were crowded around the barbecue area when the explosion occurred."
One adult and a child sustained serious burns to the face and chest and were treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to Concord Hospital.
Two adults and a child were also treated at the scene and were driven to Liverpool Hospital.
At least 150 people were in the picnic area when the blast occurred.
Police are still trying to establish the exact cause of the explosion.
