Jerusalem

Jerusalem (/əˈrsələm/; Hebrew: יְרוּשָׁלַיִם Yerushaláyim pronounced [jeruˈʃalajim]; Arabic: القُدس al-Quds pronounced [ˈaːɫ ˈquːdsˤ]), located on a plateau in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religionsJudaism, Christianity and Islam. Israelis and Palestinians both claim Jerusalem as their capital, as Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions there and the State of Palestine ultimately foresees it as its seat of power; however, neither claim is widely recognized internationally.

During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE. In 1538, walls were built around Jerusalem under Suleiman the Magnificent. Today those walls define the Old City, which has been traditionally divided into four quarters—known since the early 19th century as the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters. The Old City became a World Heritage Site in 1981, and is on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Modern Jerusalem has grown far beyond the Old City's boundaries.

    West Jerusalem

West Jerusalem or Western Jerusalem refers to the section of Jerusalem that remained under Israeli control after the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, whose ceasefire lines delimited the boundary with the rest of the city, which was then under Jordanian control. A number of western countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States acknowledge de facto Israeli authority, but withhold de jure recognition. Israel's claim of sovereignty over West Jerusalem is considered to be stronger than its claim over East Jerusalem.

    History

    Division in 1949

The United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine made of Jerusalem and its area an international city.

Following the 1948 Palestine war, Jerusalem was divided into two parts: the western portion, populated mainly by Jews, came under Israeli rule, while East Jerusalem came under Jordanian rule and was populated mainly by Palestinian Muslims and Christians.

Arabs living in such western Jerusalem neighbourhoods as Katamon or Malha were forced to leave; the same fate befell Jews in the eastern areas, including the Old City of Jerusalem and Silwan. Almost 70% of the land in West Jerusalem in the pre-mandate period had been owned by Palestinians, a fact which made it hard for the evicted Palestinians to accept Israeli control in the West. The Knesset (Israeli Parliament) passed laws to transfer this Arab land to Israeli Jewish organizations.

    Holy Land

The Holy Land (Hebrew: אֶרֶץ הַקוֹדֵשׁ Eretz HaKodesh, Latin: Terra Sancta; Arabic: الأرض المقدسة Al-Arḍ Al-Muqaddasah) is an area roughly located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea but also includes the Eastern Bank of the Jordan River. Historically, it is synonymous with both the Land of Israel and Palestine and currently it is part of the State of Israel, the Palestinian Territories, the Lebanese Republic, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is considered holy by certain Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

Part of the significance of the land stems from the religious significance of Jerusalem, the holiest city to Judaism, the historical region of Jesus's ministry, and the Isra and Mi'raj event in Islam and Mount Nebo, where Moses presumably died. The perceived holiness of the land to Christianity was part of the motivation for the Crusades, as European Christians sought to win the Holy Land back from the Muslim Seljuk Turks. The Turks had taken over the Holy Land after defeating the Muslim Arabs, who had in turn conquered the area from the Christian Byzantine Empire.

'Jerusalem' is featured as a movie character in the following productions:

    Kingdom of Heaven (2005)

Actors: Brendan Gleeson (actor), Robert Pugh (actor), Edward Norton (actor), Bill Paterson (actor), Alex O'Dogherty (actor), Jeremy Irons (actor), Kevin McKidd (actor), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (actor), Orlando Bloom (actor), Peter Copley (actor), Eriq Ebouaney (actor), Liam Neeson (actor), Iain Glen (actor), David Thewlis (actor), Michael Sheen (actor),

Plot: It is the time of the Crusades during the Middle Ages - the world shaping 200-year collision between Europe and the East. A blacksmith named Balian has lost his family and nearly his faith. The religious wars raging in the far-off Holy Land seem remote to him, yet he is pulled into that immense drama. Amid the pageantry and intrigues of medieval Jerusalem he falls in love, grows into a leader, and ultimately uses all his courage and skill to defend the city against staggering odds. Destiny comes seeking Balian in the form of a great knight, Godfrey of Ibelin, a Crusader briefly home to France from fighting in the East. Revealing himself as Balian's father, Godfrey shows him the true meaning of knighthood and takes him on a journey across continents to the fabled Holy City. In Jerusalem at that moment--between the Second and Third Crusades--a fragile peace prevails, through the efforts of its enlightened Christian king, Baldwin IV, aided by his advisor Tiberias, and the military restraint of the legendary Muslim leader Saladin. But Baldwin's days are numbered, and strains of fanaticism, greed, and jealousy among the Crusaders threaten to shatter the truce. King Baldwin's vision of peace--a kingdom of heaven--is shared by a handful of knights, including Godfrey of Ibelin, who swear to uphold it with their lives and honor. As Godfrey passes his sword to his son, he also passes on that sacred oath: to protect the helpless, safeguard the peace, and work toward harmony between religions and cultures, so that a kingdom of heaven can flourish on earth. Balian takes the sword and steps into history.

    Quotes:

Tiberias: I have given Jerusalem my whole life. First, I thought we were fighting for God. Then I realized we were fighting for wealth and land. I was ashamed.

Imad: This is not a very good horse... I will not keep him. [he hands the reins to Balian]

Godfrey of Ibelin: [Director's Cut, before caving in his nephew's skull] Thank my brother for his love!

King Baldwin IV: If you continue like this, I shall have to find some use for you. If God can spare you, that is.::Balian of Ibelin: God does not know me.::King Baldwin IV: Yes, but I do.

Reynald: Who says I raid?::Tiberias: That witness, all of Jerusalem, Holy God! - and me.

Godfrey of Ibelin: You are not what you were born, but what you have within yourself to be.

Balian of Ibelin: [to the people of Jerusalem] It has fallen to us, to defend Jerusalem, and we have made our preparations as well as they can be made. None of us took this city from Muslims. No Muslim of the great army now coming against us was born when this city was lost. We fight over an offence we did not give, against those who were not alive to be offended. What is Jerusalem? Your holy places lie over the Jewish temple that the Romans pulled down. The Muslim places of worship lie over yours. Which is more holy?::[pause]::Balian of Ibelin: The wall? The Mosque? The Sepulchre? Who has claim? No one has claim.::[raises his voice]::Balian of Ibelin: All have claim!::Bishop, Patriarch of Jerusalem: That is blasphemy!::Almaric: [to the Patriarch] Be quiet.::Balian of Ibelin: We defend this city, not to protect these stones, but the people living within these walls.

Guy de Lusignan: [approaching a Muslim caravan] This caravan is armed, Reynald.::Reynald: Good. No sport otherwise.::Guy de Lusignan: They've seen us. Go after them. The rider is getting away.::Reynald: It's broad desert. Nothing will come of it, nothing.::Guy de Lusignan: I'd prefer not to be hanged before my wife is queen.::Reynald: Don't worry. "Who but Reynald", they'll say. It's always me. They'll believe it in Jerusalem, I assure you. You were at Nazareth, praying.::Guy de Lusignan: You're a dangerous man, Reynald.::Reynald: If the war's to be now or later, I would have it now. How long can the leper last?::Templar Master: God wills it. God wills it!::Templars: God wills it!::Reynald: Jerusalem! [all charge towards the Muslim caravan]

Balian of Ibelin: It is a kingdom of conscience, or nothing.

priest exhorting Crusaders: To kill an infidel, the Pope has said, is not murder; it is the path to Heaven.

Throughout the past several months, Jerusalem has been a scene of clashes and violent attacks. Silwan, a Palestinian neighborhood just steps away from Jerusalem's Old City, has been at the heart of the unrest, and is becoming one of the most contentious neighborhoods in the most contested city in the world. As settlement expansion into East Jerusalem continues, Israeli authorities have ramped up their practice of demolishing homes built without proper permits — permits which are near impossible for Palestinians to acquire. In addition to the demolitions due to lack of permits, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in early November the reinstatement of the policy of demolishing terrorists' homes, which Palestinians claim is a form of collective punishment. Jerusalem's Old City is a tiny enclave where some of history's greatest dramas have been enacted. Busy and colorful, it is the fountainhead of three major religions, the site of many of the world's most venerated shrines, and home to 26,000 people of profoundly different cultures who live side by side in a fragile peace. Jerusalem: Within These Walls offers a kaleidoscopic view of the city and its people as they are today—the remarkable outcome of 3,000 years of history, hope, and faith.

VICE News traveled to Silwan and met with Palestinians and Israelis living in this contested neighborhood at a time when Jerusalem is more divided than ever. Fasten your seat belts! This is a glimpse of one of the holiest cities on Earth, with thousands of years of world-shaping history un-boringly condensed into just 60 seconds. Welcome to Jerusalem. Try not to blink. For more from this series, visit: http://davidfreid.com/project/stories-from-the-holyland/ --- By request, for those who may have trouble following along, here is the text of the video's narration: Hi, hello, shalom, keef halak, and welcome to Jerusalem. I’ll be your guide for this one minute tour. But before we begin, I should mention that the inherent brevity implied by this video's title reduces a bunch of history into a few winded soundbites. [inhale] Those offended by abbreviated content should click back on their browser, stop by your preferred internet search engine, or just book a flight to Jerusalem. If you’re still watching, try not to blink, as these numerous holy edifices have been central to human culture for thousands of years and we’ll be seeing them for just 60 seconds. Since time basically began for at least three major monotheistic religions, this has has been one of the most important holy sites. For those into Judaism, this is the very old school location of the First and Second temple. The Temple Mount is widely considered the 3rd holiest site in Islam among Sunni Muslims. This Noble Sanctuary is the location of Muhammad’s journey to Jerusalem and ascent into heaven. The al-Aqsa Mosque was constructed on the site after the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem in 673. Before Mecca in Saudi Arabia became central to Muslim worship, this mosque was the direction of prayer. Just below the Temple Mount is the Western or “Wailing” Wall, the holiest site in Judaism. This is a remnant of the ancient wall that surrounded the Jewish Temple's courtyard. Visitors like to leave prayers on pieces of paper between the wall's ancient stones for the Divine Presence that rests there. Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sorrows, held to be the path that Jesus walked, carrying his cross, on the way to crucifixion. Which takes us to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre... This church has been a big deal Christian destination since at least the 4th century, and is the purported site of the resurrection of Jesus. It's important to note that the church is not one church, but rather a "warehouse" of churches for each denomination present. Finally, just across the way is the Mount of Olives - used as a Jewish cemetery for over 3,000 years. Jesus is said to have spent time on the mount, teaching and prophesying to his disciples, was there on the night of his betrayal, then again after his resurrection, and eventually ascended to heaven from this very hilltop. And there you have it, one very condensed history of an endlessly complex and beautiful place. For more audio/video overstimulation, feel free to click replay with your friends.

This is a glimpse of West Jerusalem, and the duality of life there as I witnessed it during my brief stay. West Jerusalem is a sociopolitical term referring to the part of Jerusalem that is mainly Jewish in population - the other half, East Jerusalem, being comprised mostly by Palestinian Arabs. One of the core issues between these two groups is over the control of this city. For more from this series, visit: http://davidfreid.com/project/stories-from-the-holyland/

It is the holiest city in Judaism and the spiritual center of the Jewish people since the 10th century BCE, the third-holiest in Islam and is also home to a number of significant and ancient Christian landmarks. It is also a city with a very violent past, as it was fiercely contested between Christianity and Islam during the brutal Crusade era. While the city has had a large Jewish majority since 1967, a wide range of national, religious, and socioeconomic groups are represented here. When you think of traveling to Israel visiting religious sites in Jerusalem or basing yourself in Tel Aviv may initially come to mind. However, when exploring Israel it is paramount to set aside enough time to get off the beaten path and explore more of the country. Fortunately, for us, we were able to make two separate trips to Israel experiencing as much food, culture, historical and modern attractions as we possibly could. Covering yourself in gooey mud and joining others floating is one of the top attractions in Israel. 2) No trip to Israel would be complete without sampling the local cuisine and especially the street food. With this in mind we walked all the way from our hotel room in Tel Aviv to Jaffa - an ancient city renowned for its amazing hummus and other street food. Aside from just hummus we were able to try Shaksouka, cheese stuffed pastries, malabi and kanafeh. 3) Having the opportunity to take a tour of the West Bank (or Palestine) is an eye opening experience. Media coverage, from the perspective of the west, often depicts this area as being quite unruly and poor; however, a tour there really dispels a lot of myths. We had the opportunity to eat falafel, walking around the streets and get a real sense of what life is like in this region. Some highlights included visiting Sheppard's Field, the Jordan River and oldest city in the world - Jericho. To end our trip we drank beer at the West Bank Palestinian brewery. 4) Getting off the beaten track a little we visited Rosh Hanikra. Known as the window to the Mediterranean we were treated to breathtaking views and an amazing sunset. 5) Aside from just eating our way around Jaffa, we took the time to properly explore it on foot. One of the top highlights was visiting a traditional flea market, 6) Taking the cable car up to visit Masada was a welcome relief considering how hot it was on the day we visited. As we wandered about we visited an old water cistern and Byzantine church. 7) Caesarea! The ruins of the ancient city once given from Agus Caesar to Harrod the Great was an experience we'll never forget. Walking around in the Hippodrome allowed me to visualize what the old chariot races must have been like. 8) One of my favorite meals in Israel was prepared by a Druze family. This amazing feast, in the form of a buffet, featured kebabs, olives, chicken and stuffed cabbage just to name a few. 9) Wondering wear to rest your sleepy head while traveling in Israel? Look no further than the Fauzi Azar Inn in Nazareth. This converted Arab Mansion. 10) One of the more frontier attractions was visiting Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. We toured around the Banias Reserve and Mount Bental. 11) Considering how tasty the food is in Israel it would be a shame to leave without knowing how to recreate these delectable delights back home in your own kitchen. Fortunately, for us, we were able to take a cooking class at Dan Gourmet in Tel Aviv. We learned how to make Lahmacun and charred eggplant amongst other dishes. 12) Have you ever wondered how olive oil is made? Visiting an olive press answered our all of our questions and made us appreciate the craft of making this high quality cooking oil. For the best vantage point of Nazareth we headed to Mount Precipice for panoramic 360 degree views. Finally, we visited Haifa to check out the famous Bahá'í gardens. A walking tour around the old city of Jerusalem. The film chronologically progresses from morning to the small hours of the night, showing daily life. For those planning on visiting, those who’d like to visit but cannot or those who might be nostalgic and want to re-live their past visits / life there, hopefully this film shall satisfy, time and time again. A person MUST experience the city at least once in their lifetime. Jerusalem, located on a plateau in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE. In 1538, walls were built around Jerusalem under Suleiman the Magnificent. Today those walls define the Old City, which has been traditionally divided into four quarters - known since the early 19th century as the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters. The Old City became a World Heritage site in 1981. Modern Jerusalem has grown far beyond the Old City's boundaries. Simply wandering the streets of the Old City while capturing the ambiance, historical sites, smells and different people will leave you with unforgettable experiences and a lifetime of amazing memories. Filmed in December 2010. Jerusalem Travel Guide: Located in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea, Jerusalem is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The walled area of Jerusalem, which until the late nineteenth century formed the entire city, is now called the Old City and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. It consists of four ethnic and religious sections — the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters. Barely one square kilometer, the Old City is home to several of Jerusalem's most important and contested religious sites including the Western Wall and Temple Mount for Jews, the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians. Surrounding the Old City are more modern areas of Jerusalem. The civic and cultural center of modern Israel extends from western Jerusalem toward the country's other urban areas to the west, while areas populated mostly by Arabs can be found in the northern, eastern and southern districts. Archaeological findings prove the existence of development within present-day Jerusalem as far back as the 4th millennium BCE, but the earliest written records of the city come in the Execration Texts (c. 19th century BCE) and the Amarna letters (c. 14th century BCE). According to Biblical accounts, the Jebusites, a Canaanite tribe, inhabited the area around the present-day city (under the name Jebus) until the late 11th century BCE. At that point (c. 1000s BCE), the Israelites, led by King David, invaded and conquered the city, expanding it southwards and establishing it as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah (the United Monarchy). It was renamed at this time as Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), a name by which it is still referred to today. King David's reign over Jerusalem ended around 970 BCE when his son Solomon became the new king. Biblical sources state that within a decade Solomon started to build the first of two Holy Temples within city limits — Solomon's Temple (or the First Temple), a significant site in Jewish and Christian history as the last known location of the Ark of the Covenant. The period of the First Temple was marked by the division of the United Monarchy at the time of Solomon's death (c. 930 BCE) when the ten northern tribes, originally part of the Monarchy, split off to form the Kingdom of Israel. Under the leadership of the bloodline of David and Solomon, Jerusalem continued to act as the capital of the southern par of the split, the Kingdom of Judah. Later, with the Assyrian conquest of the Kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE, Jerusalem became the center of a Judah strengthened by the great number of Israeli refugees. In approximately 586 BCE, the Babylonians conquered the Kingdom of Judah including the city of Jerusalem, and the First Temple Period came to an end. In 538 BCE, after fifty years of Babylonian captivity, the Jews were given permission from Persian King Cyrus the Great to return to Judah so they could rebuild Jerusalem and construct the Second Temple. The construction was completed in the year 516 BCE, seventy years after the destruction of the First Temple. Jerusalem regained its status as capital of Judah and center of Jewish worship for another four centuries, with a considerable portion of that period under Hasmonean rule. By 19 BCE, the Temple Mount was elevated and construction began on an expansion of the Second Temple under Herod the Great, a Jewish client king under Roman rule. In 6 CE, the city, as well as much of the surrounding area, came under direct Roman rule as the Judea Province. Still unchallenged, the Roman rule over Jerusalem and the region came to an end with the first Jewish-Roman war, the Great Jewish Revolt, which resulted in the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. Jerusalem once again served as the national capital for the people of the region during the three-year rebellion known as Bar Kokhba's revolt. The Romans succeeded in sacking and recapturing the city in 135 CE and as a punitive measure, the Jews were banned from Jerusalem. Now I know that every tour probably plays the song "The Holy City" as the bus enters the city. But it does stir a lot of emotions within, and there were lumps in our throats while this music played. You grow up learning about these ancient biblical landmarks but you never believed you would actually see, feel, touch and experience them first-hand - the views from Mount Zion to take in the fabulous views of the old city; Temple Mount; the Holy Sepulchre and the site of Christ's crucifixion; the Wailing Wall; the Mount of Olives and the Garden of Gethsemane. Our guide, Mickey, relayed many interesting tales during the day. One last story before we reached the ship: two Jewish men die and go to heaven. One is a holy rabbi and the other is a bus driver. They say, for the good you do on earth defines what you get in heaven. The rabbi arrives and is given a modest home; the bus driver arrives and is given a condominium with wonderful views. The incensed rabbi goes to the archangel and asks "why is this so?" The Archangel replies: When people come to your church (hmm or should I say synagogue), instead of praying they fall asleep. When people ride on the driver's bus they all pray!! Boom boom! Music:

a 90 minute collage of text, music and images, based on the lives of rabbi nachman of breslav and salon hostess rahel varnhagen. the lives of these two historical persons overlapped during the first decade of the 19th century. rabbi nachman of breslav founded the breslav hassidic sect in the ukraine, and rahel varnhagen was a salon hostess of the jewish enlightenment movement, known as the "haskalah", in berlin. i combined their biographies and imagined what might have happened in reality and in fantasy if nachman showed up at rahel's salon and attempted to bring the assimilating jews there back to the fold of orthodox judaism. the 90 minute show begins in the style of naturalism and evolves into an expressionistic fantasy being woven by the two main characters, in which nachman projects onto rahel the role of "the shekhinah" ( female aspect of god and also the jewish people in relation to god), while rahel projects onto nachman the role of messiah. so we end up at the end of the show with a fantasy marriage of the jewish people and the jewish messiah at the end of days, without forgetting for a moment that in real life these two never met and as a matter of fact rahel converted to christianity and married the german protestant nobleman august varnhagen. IN THE ESSAYS THAT FOLLOW THE SHOW HAS ITS ORIGINAL NAME, "RAHEL! RAHEL!". I CHANGED THE NAME AFTER I DISCOVERED ON THE NET THAT PAUL NEWMAN MADE A MOVIE WITH THAT NAME BACK IN THE 1960'S. ALSO PLEASE NOTE MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ME ANY COMMENTS ABOUT MY WORK: franklynwepner@gmail.com. IN THE LISTING OF VIDEOS THE LETTERS (HQ) REFER TO A HIGHER QUALITY VERSION OF THE VIDEO, WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO YOU IF YOUR COMPUTER CAN HANDLE IT. APPRECIATING MY MUSICAL SHOW "RAHEL! RAHEL!" 1. GENERAL THEORY Of course, the best way to begin to appreciate most works of art is just to experience them a few times and form your own conclusions. The opinions of the creator of an artwork are merely incidental at that stage of the process. And certainly once an artwork is created it takes on a life of its own, just like a child more and more slips out of the control of its parents. Nevertheless, I think we will agree that this particular artwork is unique in its form, what it seeks to accomplish, and the demands it makes on its audience. "Rahel! Rahel!" is an ambitious project which reaches out beyond the realm of art and grapples with major issues of religion and philosophy. Whether I as the author have succeeded in my project is for you the audience to decide, but since my artwork is intended to operate on several different levels I feel it appropriate for me to lay out for you the plan of what might be there for you if I have succeeded in carrying out my original goals. Just as I did not compromise in creating the piece, I will not compromise here in discussing the piece. If you don't "get it", maybe I failed and there ain't nothing there to "get" in the first place. Or if you don't "get it", maybe you need to do some homework on your own, or just give up on it and go do something else more appropriate for your talents. Nachman of Breslav wrote "my Torah is entirely 'b'hinot' ". "B'hinot", in Hebrew, means "aspects of", "associations", "points of view". For example, if I think of vanilla ice cream then I can associate to that idea chocolate ice cream, or cows, or a forest of vanilla beans somewhere in Madagascar. In other words, there is no limit to the range of possible associations I might get. Nachman might have said instead, "my Torah is entirely induction", and then we would contrast inductive logic to deductive logic. Deductive logic begins with a single idea and like an upside down tree follows the ramifications of that idea out into the myriad subdivisions and corollaries of that idea. Scientific textbooks usually are written deductively. Inductive logic begins with the vast realm of concrete living awareness experiences and step by step moves up the upside down tree back to a single encompassing idea that strives to somehow include all of the original experiences in its breadth. Francis Bacon in the 14th century championed inductive logic. Theologically speaking, Breslav kabbalah is inductive thinking, while Chabad kabbalah is deductive thinking. Nachman begins with a wide range of Torah texts and trusts in associative links to get to his main points, while Shneur Zalman, author of the Chabad "Tanya", writes an orderly textbook in which he systematically lays out his major and minor premisses. But both authors are using the same tree style thinking. Nachman moves up the upside down tree, while Shneur Zalman moves down the upside down tree, the kabbalistic tree of life on which the "sefirot" (points of view) are hanging like Christmas tree ornaments. For philosophy in general, this tree is th

A couple had been debating the purchase of a new auto for weeks. He wanted a new truck. She wanted a fast little sports-like car so she could zip through traffic around town. He would probably have settled on any beat up old truck, but everything she seemed to like was way out of their price range. "Look!" she said. "I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in 4 seconds or less. And my birthday is coming up. You could surprise me." So, for her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale. Services will be at Downing Funeral Home on Monday the 12th. Due to the condition of the body, this will be a closed casket service. Please send your donations to the "Think Before You Say Things To Your Wife Foundation," Dallas, Texas. WE JOKE ABOUT DEATH A women accompanied her husband to the doctor's office. After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his office alone. He said, "If you don't do the following, your husband will surely die: 1. Each morning , fix him a healthy breakfast. 2. Be pleasant and make sure he is in a good mood. 3. For lunch, make him a nutritious meal. 4. For dinner, prepare him an especially nice meal. 5. Don't burden him with chores as he probably had a hard day. 6. Don't discuss your problems with him. On the way home, the husband asked his wife what the doctor said to her. "You're going to die," she replied. WOODY ALLEN "I'm not afraid of death. It's just that I don't want to be there when it happens." - Woody Allen THE TRUTH OF CHRIST I once scorned ev’ry fearful thought of death, When it was but the end of pulse and breath, But now my eyes have seen that past the pain There is a world that’s waiting to be claimed. Earthmaker, Holy, let me now depart, For living’s such a temporary art. And dying is but getting dressed for God, Our graves are merely doorways cut in sod. (Calvin Miller) Death is painful, death is an enemy. For those who have a living, real relationship by faith in Jesus Christ, death is the final pain and the last enemy. 1 Corinthians 15:25-26 (ESV) For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. THE HOPE OF HEAVEN: CHRIST WILL SWALLOW UP DEATH FOREVER Isaiah 25:6-9 (ESV) On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” WHILE WE DO NOT HAVE TO FEAR DEATH, WE DO NEED TO PREPARE FOR IT.  We will reap in Heaven what we have sown in this life… Galatians 6:7-10 (ESV) Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. HEAVENLY FOCUS WILL PRODUCE CHANGES IN OUR EARTHLY LIFE...  Purchases…  How will this enhance my life in eternity  Could this money be used to benefit someone for eternity?  Relationships  Will this person enjoy life with me in the New Jerusalem  What can I say or do to touch this person for eternity?  PossessionsDo I love things that I will be able to enjoy on the New Earth?  Will I get upset over this on the New Earth?  Works of my heart and hands?  Any chance this will survive the fire?  How will this influence the New Earth to come? PREPARE FOR OUR LIFE ON A NEW EARTH 2 Peter 3:7-13 (NASB) But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed

Nehemiah 1:11-2:8 January 2, 2011 INTRODUCTION Personal miracles are… Needs that God fulfills with our presence or action Opportunities for God to show his personal love and concern through a human agent. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 (New International Version) _RESPOND TO GOD’S NUDGES “O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you.” Nehemiah 1:11 “How can I not be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins.” Nehemiah 2:3 Pay attention to out of context thoughts or interruptions An inner push that directs us toward a person or an action I. __DRAW OUT THE NEED Provision, resources, money Dreams that are dashed, loss of potential Broken relationships A. A _revealing_ clue: is a signal that comes from another person’s words or body language. The king asked, “Why are you looking so sad? You don’t look sick ... You must be deeply troubled.” Nehemiah 2:2 B. A _clarifying_ response: Confirming a need. Usually in the form of a question “The king asked, “Well, how can I help you?” Nehemiah 2:4 II. INVEST YOURSELF AND RISK The king said to me, "What is it you want?" Then I prayed to the God of heaven…” Nehemiah 2:4 NIV Asking to be sent “If you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city.” Nehemiah 2:5 Asking for involvement – and don’t limit it to Christians “If it pleases the king, let me have letters… Nehemiah 2:7 “Let me have timber” Nehemiah 2:8 “The king, I should add sent along army officers and horsemen to protect me.” Nehemiah 2:9 Asking that deeper question that comes to mind about the need. a. Trust God to lead you (Move through fear). b. Search for the emotional obstacle or limiting belief. c. Give God time to act. III. __ACKNOWLEDGE_ WHAT GOD HAS DONE “The king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me.” Nehemiah 2:8 Help others to see and give God the credit. CONCLUSION “The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden…you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.” Isaiah 58:11-12 (NLT) This is the English Transcript Nehemiah lived in Persia in four hundred and fifty BC He was the cupbearer a person that tested all the food and drink of the king to make sure it wasn't a poison They had a close relationship but the king was the king and the cup bearer was the cup bearer Nehemiah was an ordinary person that God called to do an extraordinary task the rebuilding of the wall to the temple It wasn't something he could do on his own In fact he wasn't even free to do what God called him to do in that moment a feeling of God's pushing of God's nudging in his life he had to go to the king and get the king's permission and well you never know what the king is going to do That's the scene of our scripture passage this morning so please follow along in your Bibles or we've printed it for you on the leaf of your bulletin Nehemiah chapter one starting in verse eleven Oh Lord please hear my prayer listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me put it in his heart to be kind to me In those days I was the king's cup bearer Early the following spring in the month of Nisan during the twelfth year of king Artaxerxes reign I was serving the king his wine I had never before appeared sad in his presence so the king asked me why are you looking so sad? you don't look sick to me you must be deeply troubled Then I was terrified But I replied “Long live the king! How can I not be sad for the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins the gates have been destroyed by fire” The king asked How can I help you? With a prayer to the God of heaven I replied “if it pleases the king and if you are pleased with me your servant send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried” Then the king with the queen sitting beside him asked “how long will you be gone? when will you return? After I told him how long I would be gone The king agreed to my request I also said to the king “if it pleases the king let me have letters addressed to the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River instructing them to let me travel safely throug

• A City Divided: Jerusalem's Most Contested Neighborhood

VICE News traveled to Silwan and met with Palestinians and Israelis living in this contested neighborhood at a time when Jerusalem is more divided than ever. This is the city I was born in. A city with profound meaning to so many people throughout the history of time. This is, Jerusalem. I spent 3 months documenting the city. Seeking for the moment.
