Top gigs: Peter Fonda, Sleepmakeswaves, Hardcore Troubadour, Balance and Composure, Melanie Oxley and Chris Abrahams

PETER FONDA
Friday, March 24, Petersham Bowling Club, pbc.org.au

Venture to the bowlo for some new indie-rock sounds with Peter Fonda, featuring members of other local favourites including Machine Machine, plus Matt Toohey's excellent Kid Cornered and the Ice Chest Orchestra. That is, if you can tear yourself away from the venue's top craft-beer selection. It is Friday night, after all. Tickets on the door for $8.

SLEEPMAKESWAVES
Friday, March 24, the Metro, ticketek.com.au

It's a big gig for Sydney post-rock standouts Sleepmakeswaves, whose anticipated third album Made of Breath Only is out now. They celebrate that release and kick off a national – and New Zealand – tour with one of their biggest shows in their home town yet. Expect plenty of tunes from the new set. Tickets available for $34.80.

HARDCORE TROUBADOUR
Sunday, March 26, Newtown Social Club Front Bar, newtownsocialclub.com

Sunday afternoons are made for alt-country sounds, and few deliver them better in Sydney than Sam Shinazzi and Adam Young. The good friends unite for a free show downstairs at the soon-to-be-closed venue, so make the most of it while you can.

BALANCE AND COMPOSURE
Tuesday, March 28, Factory Theatre, factorytheatre.com.au

The Pennsylvania alt-rockers, who have garnered comparisons with everyone from emo favourites Brand New to Nirvana, bring their third album, 2016's Light We Made, to Australia. With Oslow, Introverts and rising emo-punk stars Dear Seattle also on the bill, this one's worth it for the great local supports alone. Tickets are $40.

MELANIE OXLEY AND CHRIS ABRAHAMS
Thursday, March 29, Django Bar, Camelot Lounge, Marrickville, stickytickets.com.au

These two exceptional artists haven't played together for some time, busy with other projects – Melanie Oxley arranged the children's choir of the last Sydney Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds show, while Chris Abrahams has been on tour with his act the Necks. The dream team comes back together for one special night at Camelot's Django bar, with tickets $20, or $25 on the door if available.
