We recently presented a joint paper at the 16th international conference on ‘New Political Science’ at the Universidad de Habana in Cuba (19-22 November 2013). This event provided an opportunity for a number of reflections not only in relation to the content of our paper but also on Cuba itself and its course of revolutionary history. These reflections will be spread over this and a further two posts. This first post aims to reflect on the insurgent island of Cuba since the Revolution of 1959. A second post will then relay the broad contours of our paper presentation, which focused on conditions of class struggle in Bolivia related to the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS: Movement Toward Socialism); available here. A third post will then deliver the actual text of our conference paper on Bolivia, which was presented in Spanish; available here. The theme linking all three blog posts is perhaps the idée fixe of uneven development: how the conditioning situation of uneven development shapes the class strategies from above and below in Latin American states.
