Brisbane track closures present problems for AFL fans on Gold Coast

Translink's day of free public transport has been marred by the revelation that timetables will be disrupted on Brisbane's northside on Saturday night.

AFL fans making the trip to the Gold Coast on Saturday may encounter public transport headaches on their way home, with inner-city track closures scheduled.

As south-east Queenslanders enjoy Translink's day of free public transport select stations on Brisbane's northside will be out-of-action from 8pm on Saturday until 6am on Sunday, with tracks closed from Roma Street to Albion, Eagle Junction and Northgate stations.

Translink advised train services would be affected from 7.30pm onwards and encouraged commuters to allow an extra hour of travel time, with buses replacing affected trains.

There will be two matches on the Gold Coast on Saturday, with the AFL Women's Grand Final between the Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions set to start just before 1pm, followed by the local men's derby between the Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions just after 7pm.

Fans enjoying the women's final should be able to avoid the closures, with the match scheduled to have finished and presentations starting about 4.30pm, but those travelling down for the men's local derby will have to plan their return journey well to avoid significant delays.

A TransLink spokeswoman said four extra train services would be running down to the Gold Coast for the women's final, with two running before and two more after the match.

She added there would be adequate public transport services to cover both normal commuters and those travelling to and from the AFL matches.

TransLink wasn't expecting any major problems as a result of the track closures and encouraged commuters to check the website and plan their journey.
