The esophagus is the tube that carries food, liquids and saliva from your mouth to the stomach. You may not be aware of your esophagus until you swallow something too large, too hot or too cold. You may also become aware of it when something is wrong.
The most common problem with the esophagus is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It happens when a band of muscle at the end of your esophagus does not close properly. This allows stomach contents to leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus and irritate it. Over time, GERD can cause damage to the esophagus. Other problems include heartburn and cancer.
Treatment depends on the problem. Some get better with over-the-counter medicines or changes in diet. Others may need prescription medicines or surgery.

The inner to the outer walls of your esophagus
are made of four layers of tissue that create peristalsis
The longitudinal muscle sits on my outside
While the circular muscle sits in the middle
inside
The inner circular muscle wraps around the esophagus
It contracts by squeezing together
Just like a closed fist
It squeezes simultaneously
with the longitudinal muscle
Which run up and down the esophagus’s
long hollow tunnel
Lining the hollow center of your esophagus
Are the mucosa and submucosa
This is where they sit

It passes the epiglottis which covers the Trachea in you
Then the Upper esophageal sphincter will stay closed
until the brain tells it to open to let your food flow
When foods in your esophagus peristalsis

Thats when circular and longitudinal muscle’s
do work
These two muscles contract in the wave motion shown
pushing your food towards your stomachs main digestive zone
Peristalsis is fished near your stomach top
Where your lower esophageal sphincter
lets food drop
Once the food is in your stomach
the lower sphincter closes tight
In order to keep stomach acid
out of sight
I’m 8 to10 inches in tubular length
and 3/4 of an inch wide but I’m full of strength
So take care of me because I am esophagus

Esophagus
The esophagus (American English) or oesophagus (British English), commonly known as the foodpipe or gullet, is an organ in vertebrates which consists of a fibromuscular tube through which food passes, aided by peristaltic contractions, from the pharynx to the stomach. In humans, the esophagus is usually 18–25 centimeters (cm) long. During swallowing the epiglottis tilts backwards to prevent food from going down the larynx. The esophagus travels behind the trachea and heart, passes through the diaphragm and empties into the cardia of the stomach. The word esophagus derives from the Greek word oisophagos, which means "to carry to eat."
The wall of the esophagus from the lumen outwards consists of mucosa, submucosa (connective tissue), layers of muscle fibers between layers of fibrous tissue, and an outer layer of connective tissue. The mucosa is a stratified squamous epithelium (multiple layers of cells topped by a layer of flat cells) which contrasts to the single layer of columnar cells of the stomach. The transition between these two type of epithelium is visible as a zig-zag line. Most of the muscle is smooth muscle although striated muscle predominates in its upper two thirds. It has two muscular rings or sphincters in its wall, one at the top and one at the bottom. The lower sphincter helps to prevent reflux of acidic stomach content. The esophagus has a rich blood supply and vascular drainage. Its smooth muscle is innervated by involuntary nerves (sympathetic nerves via the sympathetic trunk and parasympathetic nerves via the vagus nerve) and in addition voluntary nerves (lower motor neurons) are carried in the vagus nerve to innervate its striated muscle.

Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
History
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad.When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.

Barrett's esophagus
Barrett's esophagus (British English: Barrett's oesophagus), sometimes called Barrett syndrome, Barrett esophagus, or columnar epithelium lined lower oesophagus (CELLO), refers to an abnormal change (metaplasia) in the cells of the lower portion of the esophagus. It is characterized by the replacement of the normal stratified squamous epithelium lining of the esophagus by simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells (which are usually found lower in the gastrointestinal tract). The medical significance of Barrett's esophagus is its strong association (about 0.5% per patient-year) with esophageal adenocarcinoma, a very often deadly cancer, because of which it is considered to be a premalignant condition.

I’m right behind the trachea and heart that pumps
I connect the throat to the stomach in you
Before I reach your stomach your diaphragm I pass through
My outer muscles are what help me to push food
These muscles contract in wave motions to help push it through
This wave motion is called Peristalsis
Now lets look at all the muscles that help me do this
The inner to the outer walls of your esophagus
are made of four layers of tissue that create peristalsis
The longitudinal muscle sits on my outside
While the circular muscle sits in the middle
inside
The inner circular muscle wraps around the esophagus
It contracts by squeezing together
Just like a closed fist
It squeezes simultaneously
with the longitudinal muscle
Which run up and down the esophagus’s
long hollow tunnel
Lining the hollow center of your esophagus
Are the mucosa and submucosa
This is where they sit

I am your esophagus

When you swallow your food after it is chewed
It passes the epiglottis which covers the Trachea in you
Then the Upper esophageal sphincter will stay closed
until the brain tells it to open to let your food flow
When foods in your esophagus peristalsis
occurs
Thats when circular and longitudinal muscle’s
do work
These two muscles contract in the wave motion shown
pushing your food towards your stomachs main digestive zone
Peristalsis is fished near your stomach top
Where your lower esophageal sphincter
lets food drop
Once the food is in your stomach
the lower sphincter closes tight
In order to keep stomach acid
out of sight
I’m 8 to10 inches in tubular length
and 3/4 of an inch wide but I’m full of strength
So take care of me because I am esophagus
Be sure to eat healthy food and drink because its a must

In a process called metaplasia, damaged cells turn into a type of cell more like tissue found in the intestines. When this occurs in the esophagus, the condition is called Barretts esophagus.
