Geelong coach Chris Scott says Jimmy Bartel didn't handle final year perfectly

Geelong coach Chris Scott has suggested that club great Jimmy Bartel did not handle contract negotiations perfectly during his final year at the club.

Bartel retired at the end of last year after 15 seasons at the club despite wanting to play on, and having activated a trigger clause in his contract for 2017.

Fairfax senior footy writer Rohan Connolly previews all the action ahead of the first round in the 2017 AFL season.

However the Cats didn't want to Bartel to continue, telling him it would not be advisable for him to play on.

Scott opens up on the negotiations in an interview with K-Rock to be aired on the weekend.

"It wasn't perfect - but it wasn't perfect from Jimmy's side either, to be frank," the Scott said.

Having listened to an excerpt of the interview, Bartel was left somewhat confused.

That comment has left 3AW Football's newest addition perplexed.

"I'd love for him to elaborate on how he thinks I should have handled it better," Bartel told 3AW.

"I can't speak for Chris Scott (and) he must feel that way, but I don't think I publicly ever said anything against the club or the way it was handled.

"Lots of people made comment around the time and I think that's where people sometimes get confused on how they think I'm feeling, or the way it's being played out and not actually whether I'm being quoted.

"That tends to happen a bit in football."
