California state route 1
State Route 1 (SR 1) is a major north-south state highway that runs along most of the Pacific coastline of the U.S. state of California. Highway 1 has several portions designated as either Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Cabrillo Highway, Shoreline Highway, or Coast Highway. Its southern terminus is at Interstate 5 (I-5) near Dana Point in Orange County and its northern terminus is at U.S. Highway 101 (US 101) near Leggett in Mendocino County. Highway 1 also at times runs concurrently with US 101, most notably through a 54-mile (87 km) stretch in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and across the Golden Gate Bridge.
The highway is famous for running along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the USA, leading to its designation as an All-American Road. In addition to providing a scenic route to numerous attractions along the coast, the route also serves as a major thoroughfare in the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and several other coastal urban areas.
SR 1 was built piecemeal in various stages, with the first section opening in the Big Sur region in the 1930s. However, portions of the route had several names and numbers over the years as more segments opened. Last weekend Nick & I packed up our little car and headed up the coast! Our family was in town, and we thought it would be fun to show them one of our favorite places, Big Sur. It was just a short weekend trip, but we packed it with tons of fun beach trips and hiking!
On the way up, I discovered my new favorite shop, The Refill Shoppe, in Downtown Ventura. They have so many amazing organic bulk things, from Castile soap to lotion to hand sanitizer. It's all unscented, and you can add your choice of essential oil for no additional charge! So cool! I love the idea of buying products like that in bulk to reduce my plastic waste. It's a little far from where I live, but I want to go back!

Big Sur
Big Sur is a lightly populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. Although it has no specific boundaries, many definitions of the area include the 90 miles (140 km) of coastline from the Carmel River in Monterey County south to the San Carpoforo Creek in San Luis Obispo County, and extend about 20 miles (30 km) inland to the eastern foothills of the Santa Lucias. Other sources limit the eastern border to the coastal flanks of these mountains, only 3 to 12 miles (5 to 19 km) inland. Another practical definition of the region is the segment of California State Route 1 from Carmel south to San Simeon. The northern end of Big Sur is about 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco, and the southern end is approximately 245 miles (394 km) northwest of Los Angeles.
The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south". This name refers to its location south of the city of Monterey. The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only 3 miles (5 km) from the ocean.

Last weekend Nick & I packed up our little car and headed up the coast! Our family was in town, and we thought it would be fun to show them one of our favorite places, Big Sur. It was just a short weekend trip, but we packed it with tons of fun beach trips and hiking!
On the way up, I discovered my new favorite shop, The Refill Shoppe, in Downtown Ventura. They have so many amazing organic bulk things, from Castile soap to lotion to hand sanitizer. It's all unscented, and you can add your choice of essential oil for no additional charge! So cool! I love the idea of buying products like that in bulk to reduce my plastic waste. It's a little far from where I live, but I want to go back!

Although it has no specific boundaries, many definitions of the area include the 90 miles (140 km) of coastline from the Carmel River in Monterey County south to the San Carpoforo Creek in San Luis Obispo County,[1][2] and extend about 20 miles (30 km) inland to the eastern foothills of the Santa Lucias. Other sources limit the eastern border to the coastal flanks of these mountains, only 3 to 12 miles (5 to 19 km) inland.
