Giving Thanks

I know those of you in the US gave thanks on Thursday, but the expat USians of my acquaintance who live in the UK tend to do it over the weekend; indeed [personal profile] hollymath is having her thanksgiving party as I type. So I don't feel overly late in giving thanks for the things I am grateful for right now:
  • My family - not just in blood terms, but all y'all who are there for me when I need you. You know who you are.

  • Calderdale Liberal Democrats
  • - yes, we're troublemakers. Yes, we wind people up by asking awkward questions and always questioning authority. That's because WE'RE BLOODY LIBERALS.
  • My friends - there is some overlap between this category and the preceding two. If I were a normal person, this might cause me worries.
I'd type more things, but really, you get the idea. It's (sort of) Thanksgiving; I'm feeling kind of soppy, etc.etc...

Basically: you're all ace and I love you. Yes you. No, ESPECIALLY you.

So I had a really not-good day at work today. Things bothered me that shouldn't have, and other things didn't go my way for odd reasons, and the phoning gods were agin me (RIDICULOUS amounts of wrong numbers today, like seriously ridiculous). And then I got on the bus home, and there was a girl talking to someone on her phone, trying to estimate how long before she got home. I asked where she was going, and told her how long it would take; and then we got chatting.

She was smart and switched on. She was interested in politics, and she had opinions. She was passionate about what she believed in and she wanted to enthuse other young people... she really cheered me up, frankly, after all the cynicism and world-weary no-point-doing-anything stuff I hear on a regular basis.

So thank you, girl on the bus, for giving this jaded old political hack some hope on a bleak evening. I really value that, and will continue to do so, even if we never meet again.

Thank you.

For various reasons, this week has been pretty shitty. Financial woes are continuing and worsening - Conference didn't help with that; even though we lived very cheaply in Bournemouth, the loss of a week's wage has made a big hit. Depression has also been pretty bad, which buggers up my motivation to do anything other than get drunk and sleep, and I can't afford to get drunk unless other people buy the drink, and then I feel like a freeloading shit. Mat has had a bad back and has needed my support rather than being able to give me his. The wind has played havoc with my garden. The continued fawning over the Tories from all sections of the media is making me ricochet between feeling sick and feeling homicidal. Etc. etc. etc.

But rather than concentrate on all that, I'm going to concentrate on the good stuff. I want to say thank you to some people who have been candles in the darkness.
  • My mum, and Ian, who have both been wonderful about taking care of [personal profile] amazing_holly when I haven't been able to due to work and Lib Demmery

  • [livejournal.com profile] pmoodie, who is one of the best friends a girl could wish for

  • [personal profile] amazing_holly, who has been such a good girl, and written some really cool stories.

  • My Duracell Bunny, for arranging a visit and giving me something to look forward to.

  • And lastly, my poor, long-suffering [personal profile] matgb, who puts up with all my crap uncomplainingly, and holds me when I need to be held, and nags me when I need to be nagged. I don't know where I'd be without him.
Today has been particularly awful; lets put it to bed and see what tomorrow brings.
