As the days get shorter and colder, there are few things nicer than a cosy dressing gown, especially for littluns just getting out of bed, or the bath. Our selection has something for all ages and all budgets.
1. Boden Dressing Gown: From £17.10, Boden
The words Boden and bargain don’t often go hand-in-hand, but this is a great price for exceptional quality and a very warm dressing gown that stays fluffy no matter how many times it’s washed. It’s nice and long and is not a design that teens are likely to turn their noses up at either – and there’s a matching PJ set, with plain grey top. Available for ages five to 16 years.
2. DC Super Girl Robe and Pyjamas: £16.66, Argos
For ages five to 12 years, little DC fans will love this vibrant pink and blue starred robe, and better still it comes with a fun PJ set to go with it – all for well under twenty quid. We were impressed with the quality and washability factor, with very little sign of colour fading, even after several goes in the washing machine.
3. Minoti Cuddle Fleece Bear Dressing Gown: £12, Minoti
You’ll be giving your littlun lots of extra cuddles in this gorgeous bear-themed robe, while they’re bound to enjoy a bit of role play once they’ve put their hood up. It’s not as thick as some of the robes in our round-up, but for just over a tenner, it’s a steal. Available in sizes six months to three years.
4. Towels R Us Penguin Hooded Dressing Gown: £25, Towels R Us
Our little tester was surprisingly happy to cast aside a much loved older robe for this one, whose high thread count is apparently what’s responsible for the warmth and ability to stay dry even when flung on straight after a bath. It can be personalised with initials and there are alternative designs to the penguin emblem. For ages two to 12 years.
5. Disney Store Mickey Mouse Robe For Kids: £18.94, Disney Store
Rare is the child that doesn’t like Mickey Mouse, making this soft robe an instantly appealing piece of clothing for them to fling on when they jump out of bed on winter mornings or to snuggle up in for story time in the evenings. The colour stays strong, even with washing and it keeps its shape too. Available in ages two to 10 years.
6. JoJo Maman Bébé Children’s Towelling Dressing Gown: £18, JoJo Maman Bébé
Towelling dressing gowns often stay damp when they’ve come into contact with a wet body. But that’s not so with this snuggly one that you can wrap tiny tots in straight from the bath. Unlike many robes aimed at this age group (one to five years), it’s also true to size and isn’t prone to coming undone once done up, thanks to the extra button. Available in pink or navy.
7. Fatface Stripe Sheep Dressing Gown: £26, Fatface
Here’s another cosy, soft and warm offering – just the thing to get them out of bed on chilly winter mornings. We like the design too – mint green, blue and pink stripes throughout, except on the hood which has a quirky sheep design. It washes well too. For ages four to 14.
8. Monsoon Edward Knight Robe: £18, Monsoon
For kids aged three to 10 years, they’ll love the soft fabric, roomy pockets, generous length and fun British design of knights, Beefeaters and monkeys, with yellow trim on the cuffs and belt. It comes in a bag – handy if it’s a present – and if you can stretch your budget, we’d highly recommend the matching PJs.
9. Mothercare Novelty Monster Fluffy Robe: From £12, Mothercare
This fleecy robe ticks all the right boxes and our little testers thought the colourful monsters were the most amusing design they’d ever seen on a dressing gown. Not so grown up that it puts off tiny tots and not so babyish that older boys won’t wear it. Available for ages one to 10 years.
10. Bluezoo Boys’ Blue Star Print Hooded Dressing Gown: From £10, Debenhams
Another simple but effective design that manages to appeal to babies and teenagers (available for one to 14-year-olds). Made from polyester, it’s not that thick, but it’s ultra-snuggly and soft. Although some customers complain that the stitching quality isn’t great, ours was faultless and the robe did well in both the washer and dryer.
11. Next White Bird Embroidered Robe (three to 16 years): From £14, Next
Don’t want a pattern on their dressing gown? Or maybe you’re after something more subtle than an all-over print? Feast your eyes on this stylish white soft robe that has a gorgeous embroidered bird design on the back.
12. Joules Roary Character Dressing Gown: £29.95, Joules
This is part of a fabulous range and truth be told, we preferred the dinosaur design, but alas it’s nearly sold-out. This one is great too though – plain yellow from the front, then all is revealed when your littlun puts the hood up to show lion eyes, nose and even a mane. It’s gorgeously soft too. For ages two to 12 years.
13. Vertbaudet Hooded Bathrobe: £17, Vertbaudet
Order up a size, or even two sizes, as this (like most of Vertbaudet’s clothes) is on the small side. But it’s a beauty – nice and soft, washes well and it’s available in pink and purple stripes or light and dark blue stripes. For ages four to 14 years.
The Verdict: Kids’ dressing gowns
If you want a great quality dressing gown for a bargain price, then the Boden Dressing Gown gets our top vote. It has the added bonus of appealing to all age groups, too. Bluezoo's dressing gown is even cheaper – and while not quite top-notch quality, it’s still pretty good and our testers loved the look and feel. If you know a child that likes the personal touch, then Towels R Us Penguin Hooded Dressing Gown is a fabulous option, while our top recommendation for tiny tots this year goes to JoJo Maman Bébé Children’s Towelling Dressing Gown, which is thick, well-made and has a button to stop it coming undone.
