'It was unbelievable': Australian same-sex couple's proposal wows Adele

For Wade Nicholson-Doyle and his partner Chris, it was a magical experience - particularly after a difficult few months following their cafe burning down.

The Melbourne man who popped the question in front of Adele and thousands of screaming fans over the weekend says the surprise engagement was an "unbelievable" experience that topped off a horrendous six months.

The superstar herself was overcome with emotion when Wade Nicholson-Doyle followed his partner Chris up on stage before dropping onto one knee during the March 19 show at Etihad Stadium.

Getting engaged on stage with Adele

For Wade Nicholson-Doyle and his partner Chris, getting engaged on-stage at Adele's Melbourne concert was a magical experience - particularly after a terrible run of bad luck in 2016.

Speaking to Fairfax Media, Mr Nicholson-Doyle said ambushing his now-fiance in front of one of the most famous performers in the world was an unforgettable experience, especially considering the challenges both of them have recently endured.

"It was unbelievable," he said. "We'll never forget it."

The pair's cafe – Hello Sailor in Hawthorn – burned down in September. The couple were out seeing a movie when they were told an alarm had gone off inside their store.

When they arrived, they found the place "pretty much black and filled with smoke".

"Had we not turned up and called the fire brigade, we would have lost the whole building," Nicholson-Doyle said. "A month after that happened, Chris was made redundant from his job, which was then our sole source of income."

To make matters worse, the couple were caught in a "long, long" battle with their insurance company until very recently.

Thankfully, after almost seven months of hard work, Hello Sailor is set to reopen in just a few weeks. Nicholson-Doyle says the support he and Chris have received since Sunday night represents how their life is turning around.

"It's been a crazy reaction," he said. "I thought it would be two minutes of the night and that's it. But we were recognised on the way home on the tram. The next morning, we had so many messages from family and friends.

"We're grateful that Adele was generous enough to share the stage. It tells you what kind of person she is."

Adele said goodbye to Australia on Sunday before immediately jetting off to New Zealand.

Industry insiders say the 15-time Grammy Award winner is raking in at least $1 million a night as part of her current world tour.
