Jeremy Brecher's Against Doom —Out Now!

Before the election of Donald Trump the world was already speeding toward climate catastrophe. Now President Trump has jammed his foot on the global warming accelerator. Is there any way for the rest of us to put on the brakes?

Against Doom: A Climate Insurgency Manual  tells how to put that strategy into action—and how it can succeed. It is a handbook for halting global warming and restoring our climate—a how-to for climate insurgents.

“A crisp, clear, and savvy synthesis of key concepts and ideas that will help the global climate justice movement to succeed. Brecher outlines many feasible climate solutions that should give all of us hope, despite the odds.” —Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate

The Football Factory; one of Irvine Welsh's 10 Favorite Books

Irvine Welsh chooses John King’s The Football Factory as one of his 10 Favorite Books in The New York Times and on One Grand Books.

"“Coventry are fuck all. They’ve got a shit team and shit support. Hitler had the right idea when he flattened the place.” Yes, I was hooked from the opening sentences too. This is the most important English novel since Orwell put pen to paper."—Irvine Welsh

Irvine Welsh roared on to the literary scene with his 1993 novel, Trainspotting, a blisteringly funny and impassioned novel about a young junkie, Mark Renton, and his lunatic friends in Edinburgh, Scotland.

30th Anniversary of Pacifism as Pathology: Reflections on the Role of Armed Struggle in North America —Out Now!

Ward Churchill and Michael Ryan's Pacifism as Pathology has long since emerged as a dissident classic. Originally written during the mid-1980s, the seminal essay “Pacifism as Pathology” was prompted by veteran activist Ward Churchill’s frustration with what he diagnosed as a growing—and deliberately self-neutralizing—”hegemony of nonviolence” on the North American left. The essay’s publication unleashed a raging debate among activists in both the U.S. and Canada, a significant result of which was Michael Ryan’s penning of a follow-up essay reinforcing Churchill’s premise that nonviolence, at least as the term is popularly employed by white “progressives,” is inherently counterrevolutionary, adding up to little more than a manifestation of its proponents’ desire to maintain their relatively high degrees of socioeconomic privilege and thereby serving to stabilize rather than transform the prevailing relations of power.

Other Avenues's author in The San Francisco Chronicle

In the 1970s, the Bay Area developed a vibrant, interactive network of cooperatively run enterprises called the People’s Food System. Though it lasted only a few years, the movement gave birth to Other Avenues Food Co-op, Rainbow Grocery and Veritable Vegetable (now for-profit), all of which are still open. (Chronicle gardening columnist Pam Peirce started writing as one of the editors of the group’s newsletter.)

Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff, a longtime member of the worker collective at Other Avenues in the Sunset District, has told this story in her new book, Other Avenues Are Possible. The Chronicle asked Nimbark Sacharoff to outline the movement’s arc.
