Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Little Richard, Lemmy Kilmister…all great pioneers in music that will forever be associated in history as the founders of a movement called rock ‘n’ roll.
With Lemmy’s passing now less than a year, tributes and honors for him have been coming in worldwide.
On August 24, 2016, Lemmy’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles will honor him with an outpouring of love –
– Inside the legendary Rainbow Bar & Grill on the Sunset Strip, they will unveil a lifesize bronze statue of Lemmy, paid for by fans/crowdfunding. It will stand in the bar where Lemmy used to hold court. All fans are invited to attend.
– The Rainbow and The Whisky will have live online streaming of the event starting at 6 30 PM.
– Also the Rainbow remodeled their outside bar, now calling it Lemmy’s Lounge. This will be the first of a series of specially-selected locations for “Lemmy Lounges.”
– The Roxy next door will have a full Lemmy wall mural.
Elsewhere –
– The Hollywood Vampires dedicated the Motörhead song, Ace Of Spades, to Lemmy at the Grammy Awards. The band continue to play the song on tour, as is Alice Cooper.
– As a special tribute, Slidebar in Fullerton, CA, modified a full size Jack Daniels statue to look like Lemmy.
– Black Sabbath and Slipknot will headline Ozzfest Meets Knotfest, a combination of the two hard rock and metal events that will take place onSeptember 24 and 25 in San Bernardino, California. Both days will feature three stages, with one of them named after Lemmy. The Lemmy Stage will be headlined by Black Sabbath on September 24 and Slipknot on September 25.
– On December 29, 2015, the day after Lemmy died, the Oscar Blues Brewery in Colorado stamped on all of their cans, “This One Is For Lemmy.”
Tributes in Europe –
– Last week, Phil Campbell formally opened “Lemmy’s Bar” at UK’s Bloodstock Festival and took the first drink there. The bar has been renamed in honor of Motörhead’s founder and leader. On opening day at the Festival, Phil’s band, Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons, performed there. Then Dee Snider came and sang “Born To Raise Hell” with the band and rocked the house.
– In the UK, the Download Festival awarded Triple H the Lemmy award and the naming of the Lemmy stage.
– Glastonbury in the UK had huge sculpture and Ace Of Spades stage.
– UK’s Metal Hammer Golden God Awards did a tribute, “A Salute to Lemmy,” a unique celebration featured performances by Saxon and Motörhead’s Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell. It was held at the Eventim Apollo (formerly Hammersmith Apollo), a new venue for the Golden God Awards and the perfect place for Britain’s salute to Lemmy. The venue is staunchly part of Motörhead’s history — the band’s No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith live album reached No. 1 in June, 1981, 35 years to the month of this year’s awards.
– HellFest in France had a huge statue and memorabilia show and acts.
There was also a massive fireworks display that ended the festival and said “RIP Lemmy.”
– The Sweden Rock Festival had a big Lemmy Stage.
– On July 20, 2016, the Motörheadbangers Club held their first annual Hammersmith Lemmy Tribute party at the venue and nearby bar, proclaiming it Motörhead Day in London. Members flew in from many countries to celebrate the anniversary of the first Motörhead gig in 1975. “Raise a glass for Lemmy – it will get LOUD!” they said on the invitation.
– Alan Burridge, the head of the Motörheadbangers, released tribute book “Collateral Damage.”
– Germany issued special edition of 77,777 Lemmy postage stamps. They were spectacular and sold out quickly.
– The Wacken Festival in Germany on August 6 did a tribute to Lemmy, they showed a ½ hour movie presentation about Lemmy and Motörhead, with Phil, Mikkey with manager Todd Singerman on stage thanking all the fans for supporting Motörhead over all these years. They also laid the foundation for the Rainbow Bar and Grill with a Lemmy’s Lounge sign that it will be opening at Wacken 2017, and Henry Rollins did a 40 minute speech talking about one of his great idols.
– The Wacken Festival featured two Motörhead Music bands, Barbwire Dolls and Budderside. Lemmy signed both bands to his label last year, and both have new records out in 2016. Lemmy would be proud.
– On September 24 the Swedish V8 racing, renamed “Lemmy 500”
is going to take place with a special performance of Saxon featuring Phil and Mikkey playing some Motörhead songs.
– There was a huge painting of Lemmy in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where Phil Campbell performed.
– A City Hall clock in Oslo, Norway had been chiming “Electricity” from Motörhead’s Bad Magic every night at 6 PM from his day of passing until June 1.
The new Motörhead live DVD/CD/Vinyl, Clean Your Clock, which came out in June, debuted at #2 in Germany. It was Lemmy’s last show, recorded the month before he died.
