Dear WSWS readers,

The year 2017 marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution, the most monumental event in the history of the 20th century. In February of that year, the working masses of Russia overthrew the monarchy headed by the Tsar. In October, they carried out a revolution under the leadership of the Bolshevik Party that put an end to capitalist rule and created the first ever workers’ state.

All the great issues that motivated the revolutionary struggle of 1917 are present today. There is not a single social, political, economic or ecological problem for which the capitalist system even pretends to have a solution.

In the United States, the Trump administration is the noxious representative of the financial oligarchy, headed by a cabinet packed with CEOs, billionaires, ex-generals and outright fascists. His opponents in the political establishment are themselves reactionaries, concerned that Trump is shifting away from an aggressive, militarist policy toward Russia. The Democratic Party and the media are the mouthpieces of the intelligence agencies, seeking to infect the growing popular movement against Trump with the virus of militarism.

The situation in the United States is the most concentrated expression of a global crisis. Workers around the world face unending war, the continuing deterioration in their conditions of life, political repression and an eruption of the worst forms of national chauvinism.

The World Socialist Web Site is the essential counterforce to the lies of the corporate media and the representatives of the ruling class. It is the voice of the working class and the international socialist movement.

There are many reasons why you should financially support the WSWS: its daily coverage of world events, its on-the-spot reporting of workers’ struggles and protests, its reviews of art and films and, above all, the uncompromising integrity and acuity of its political analysis.

To mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution, the WSWS has launched a series of online lectures that will explain the historical and contemporary significance of these extraordinary events. These lectures will educate workers and young people around the world in the experiences of the 20th century, the necessary foundation for the development of an international socialist movement in the 21st century.

All of this requires financial resources. To keep pace with an increased readership, we must continuously maintain and improve the technological infrastructure of the web site. We need more video and other multimedia presentations. We must increase the number of languages offered to reach workers and young people of every nationality. We must expand the reach of the WSWS through social media.
