A workshop designed to share UNDP‘s innovation experience with university students and formulate a sense of responsibility towards society was held in Beijing. The “innovation for development” workshop introduced the “Geek for Good” Open Design Challenge to university students and encouraged them to establish innovative ideas and ambitions that will change the world.

An ambitious goal of China’s 13th Five-year Plan (2016­20), which entered its second year, is to eliminate extreme poverty by 2020. The progress is well on track, as 10 million people had been lifted out of poverty by the end of 2016. This success is very encouraging as it is an indication of China’s continued contribution to global development goals. The strategy consists of a variety of approaches, including ecological civilization, education, social protection and industrial development, all focusing on rural poverty.

As the global development architecture continues to change, UNDP is evolving from a donor into an advisor and development service provider; We maintained a $1 billion annual delivery while implementing a challenging change process; In 2017, our goal is to increase domestic public and private co-financing to 15 percent of our delivery as a means of adapting UNDP to the new development landscape.

Today acclaimed Chinese actress and film director Zhao Wei was appointed the National Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in China. 25 Nov 2016 –The report "The Living Standards Dimension for the Human Development Index: Measuring poverty with Big Data' brings a measure called the Living Standards Index that addresses the multi-faceted and complex nature of poverty by combining eight indicators to evaluate the provision of services of the 2,284 counties across the country. The data collected from this report is now available in an interactive visualization map.

Endosulfan is an insecticide that has been phasing out globally due to its acute toxicity, potential for bioaccumulation, and its role as an endocrine disrupter that can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Because of its threats to human health and the environment, a global ban on the manufacture and use of endosulfan was negotiated under the Stockholm Convention in April 2011.
