Dessa

Margret Wander (born May 23, 1981), better known by her stage name Dessa, is an American rapper, singer, spoken word artist, and writer. She is a member of the indie hip hop collective Doomtree.

History

Education

Dessa went to Southwest High School, graduating from the IB Diploma Programme in 1999. She attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned a B.A. in philosophy. Before becoming an artist full-time, she worked as a technical writer for a medical manufacturer.

Doomtree

Initially drawn to their raw aesthetics and unique sound, Dessa forged a friendship with Doomtree. Soon after, she started dating P.O.S. Though they eventually ended their relationship, she was asked nonetheless to join the crew, and did so. Since 2005, Dessa has appeared on numerous Doomtree albums, as well as on the other members' solo albums. She is also the CEO of Doomtree.

Dessa's debut solo EP, False Hopes, was released in 2005. Despite being only fifteen minutes long, it was listed as one of the top local albums of the year by Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Part of speech

A part of speech (abbreviated form: PoS or POS) is a category of words (or, more generally, of lexical items) which have similar grammatical properties. Words that are assigned to the same part of speech generally display similar behavior in terms of syntax—they play similar roles within the grammatical structure of sentences—and sometimes in terms of morphology, in that they undergo inflection for similar properties. Commonly listed English parts of speech are noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, interjection, and sometimes numeral, article or determiner.

A part of speech – particularly in more modern classifications, which often make more precise distinctions than the traditional scheme does – may also be called a word class, lexical class, or lexical category, although the term lexical category refers in some contexts to a particular type of syntactic category, and may thus exclude parts of speech that are considered to be functional, such as pronouns. The term form class is also used, although this has various conflicting definitions. Word classes may be classified as open or closed: open classes (like nouns, verbs and adjectives) acquire new members constantly, while closed classes (such as pronouns and conjunctions) acquire new members infrequently, if at all.

Sadahzinia

Sadahzinia (born Yolanda Tsiampokalou; Greek: Γιολάντα Τσιαμπόκαλου, in 1977) is a Greek rapper, regarded by many as the first woman to enter the hip-hop scene in Greece. Her name is a play on the words: "sad" + "jah"+ the flower "zinia". Since 1994 she has been working in the studio and performing live in Greece and Europe with the successful hip-hop/low bap group Active Member. In 2002 she officially became a member of the group.

In 1999 she took her degree of English Literature, Philosophical Faculty Athens.

She has played keyboards and percussions for a short while both in shows and in the studio, but in the last years she is more focused on her rap and on writing lyrics.

These past years she has worked either in the studio or on the stage with several artists both from abroad and from Greece, such as Waldemar Bastos, Sokratis Malamas, Rodney P, Skitz, Killa Kela, Mixologists, Adam Fuest, Winston Irie, Chris Hall, Oliver Wilson, Dynamo Dresden, Extremists and more… Also, she has often performed in London, Wales and Germany.

A Badly Broken Code

A Badly Broken Code is the debut album by Dessa, a member of Minneapolis indie hip hop collective Doomtree. It was released on Doomtree in 2010.

The album title comes from a line in the poem "Nostalgia" by American poet Billy Collins.

Reception

The A.V. Club named A Badly Broken Code the 20th best album of 2010.

Music video

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. There are also cases where songs are used in tie in marketing campaigns that allow them to become more than just a song. Tie ins and merchandising could be used in toys are marketing campaigns for food and other products. Although the origins of music videos date back to musical short films that first appeared in the 1920s, they came into prominence in the 1980s when MTV based their format around the medium. Since the creation and increased popularity of YouTube, mainstream artists now promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the site for their upcoming song and music video. Consequentially, YouTube has been converted into a social media platform for celebrities and artists to market themselves to their fans and audiences.
