Brisbane CBD building evacuated, drenched by sprinklers after fire alarm

Fire crews rushed to a Brisbane CBD building on Sunday as fire alarms sounded and sprinklers drenched the building for the second time in three months.

Water was cascading down the front steps of the Turbot Street building as crews worked to discover what had set off the alarms.

Only a handful of drenched workers, like Ben Harrison, were evacuated.

"The evacuation alarm just came out of nowhere," he said.

"Thankfully it's not a business day so there were not too many people to evacuate."

He said the sprinklers were not going off on his floor but it was the second time in three months the building's lobby had been drenched.

The alarms started sounding about noon and the situation had been brought under control by about 12.20pm.

Sherry Lin heard the fire alarm and left quickly, describing the water pouring into the lobby as "like a waterfall".

Fortitude Valley Station officer Graham Wells said an alarm had gone off on level 12 but firefighters had found no apparent cause.

The alarm activates the "deluge system", he said, which drenched the lobby and the exterior of the building's lower six floors in gallons of water.
