Why are we driving it?
Jaguar has updated its gorgeous F-Type Coupe and Convertible for 2017 with a few interesting new features within its upgraded infotainment system, including a ReRun app jointly developed with GoPro that embeds key mechanical details, such as speed, gears and g-forces, into driving videos.
Its feline style has also been enhanced with some subtle exterior changes, including wider side sills, unique front bumper designs for each model and LED headlights across the range.
What we like
No matter what Jaguar does to the range-topping F-Type, the improvements pale in significance against its stunning looks, the glorious sound its V8 makes and the performance it offers.
The 405kW/680Nm engine is an absolute stonker, with loads of grunt right the way through the rev range. It's got more than enough power, to the point where Jaguar is now only offering the F-Type R with a rear-biased all-wheel drive system that improves traction yet doesn't detract from its handling.
It is also still an occasion to drive, from the theatrical start-up procedure where the starter button pulses and the air conditioning vents rise from the dash through its pin-your-ears-back accelerative force and the cornering capabilities - all with the wind rushing through your hair with the soft top stored away.
The new infotainment system brings improved connectivity and more functionality, building on the foundations of a booming Meridien audio unit. We didn't get to try the GoPro app, but it looks like it all works pretty easily and would be great for those that take their car to the occasional track day.
The upgraded Performance seats also provide more lateral support, particularly on the shoulders, during enthusiastic driving.
But if there is one element that stands above all else with the V8-powered F-Type it is the V8's wicked soundtrack when the Sport exhaust activated. It is so glorious that you'll drive like a goose just to hear it roar under acceleration and crackle and pop when you back off, and yet it is so obnoxious that your neighbours will hate it every time you leave early or come home late.
What we dislike
Like before, the F-Type's cabin is fairly cramped for storage space, even by modern two-seater's standards. And the boot is almost useless.
Personally, I'm not convinced the new side sills and extensions on the front bumper do anything for its sleek design. But that's like saying I don't think Elle Macpherson looks good with too much mascara on.
It also isn't all that comfortable over the bumps, it isn't as agile through the bends as some of its sports car rivals and the engine is on the thirsty side of things, especially when you drive it like a loon.
Would we buy it?
Absolutely! The F-Type R isn't perfect, but it is the kind of car that tugs on your emotions to the point where you look past its flaws and admire it for its beauty and its performance. Oh, and the noise it makes.
