A trough over inland areas of the NT, QLD and NSW is generating showers and thunderstorms, some severe. A low is triggering thunderstorms over northwest WA. A monsoon trough is producing thunderstorms across the tropics. Onshore winds are bringing showers to eastern QLD and NSW.

The Southern Oscillation Index, or SOI, gives an indication of the development and intensity of El Niño or La Niña events in the Pacific Ocean.

El Niño is typically associated with lower than average rainfall, while La Niña is associated with above average rainfall.
