A sea is a large body of salt water that is surrounded in whole or in part by land. More broadly, "the sea" is the interconnected system of Earth's salty, oceanic waters—considered as one global ocean or as several principal oceanic divisions. The sea moderates Earth's climate and has important roles in the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle. Although the sea has been travelled and explored since prehistory, the modern scientific study of the sea—oceanography—dates broadly to the British Challenger expedition of the 1870s. The sea is conventionally divided into up to five large oceanic sections—including the IHO's four named oceans (the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic) and the Southern Ocean; smaller, second-order sections, such as the Mediterranean, are known as seas.
Owing to the present state of continental drift, the Northern Hemisphere is now fairly equally divided between land and sea (a ratio of about 2:3) but the South is overwhelmingly oceanic (1:4.7).Salinity in the open ocean is generally in a narrow band around 3.5% by mass, although this can vary in more landlocked waters, near the mouths of large rivers, or at great depths. About 85% of the solids in the open sea are sodium chloride. Deep-sea currents are produced by differences in salinity and temperature. Surface currents are formed by the friction of waves produced by the wind and by tides, the changes in local sea level produced by the gravity of the Moon and Sun. The direction of all of these is governed by surface and submarine land masses and by the rotation of the Earth (the Coriolis effect).

The Atlantic Wall (German: Atlantikwall) was an extensive system of coastal defence and fortifications built by Nazi Germany between 1942 and 1944 along the coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia as a defense against an anticipated Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe from Great Britain during World War II.
Hitler ordered the construction of the fortifications in 1942. Almost a million French workers were drafted to build it. The wall was frequently mentioned in Nazi propaganda, where its size and strength were usually exaggerated. The fortifications included colossal coastal guns, batteries, mortars, and artillery, and thousands of German troops were stationed in its defences. When the Allies eventually invaded the Normandy beaches in 1944, most of the defenses were stormed within hours. Today, ruins of the wall exist in all of the nations where the wall was built, although many structures have fallen into the ocean or have been demolished over the years.

North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely auto...

Ten years ago, the levees and flood walls meant to protect New Orleans failed against the force of Hurricane Katrina. Since the catastrophe, roughly $14 billion have been spent to upgrade the city's storm defenses. But is that sufficient? William Brangham reports. The large waves created by earthquakes under the sea floor destroy thousands of lives and livelihoods each year, but we know very little about how these massive walls of water behave. Dr Tiziana Rosetto (UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering) and colleagues studying fluid dynamics have created a completely new way of generating models of these waves. The information they gain allows them to predict the damage exacted by tsunami on buildings and infrastructure, helping communities worldwide defend against these potential disasters. As part of the defenses for the seaside town of Tywyn a large groyne was erected at the south end of the promenade opposite Warwick road. The rocks were delivered by sea from St Malo France and North Wales mostly by ship that transferred the rocks to barges which in turn delivered the rocks to the beach.
Hi, Set off here to take a video of the Sea defense work currently underway, Funny how history works, then I remembered it was a different sea defense in my father/grandfathers day! so had a look at the defense to keep the Germans away. Then just Hung around, a quick view of the beach I would swim from in the 70's and well just 'Hanging around Harrington'. Hope you enjoy. Subscribe to my YouTube channel to see all my videos. INTRODUCTION: President Trump's threat to strike North Korea with "fire and fury" has prompted Pyongyang to claim it is "carefully examining" a plan to hit Guam with missiles. Since it became an American territory in 1898, Guam has been considered a vital asset by Washington. It lies in the Pacific east of the Philippines and around 1,700 miles south of North Korea. Its proximity to China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula hand the US a launching pad into Asia and as such it has been built up into a military fortress. In this video, Defense Updates look at HOW POWERFUL US FORCES IN GUAM IS AND PROVIDES 5 REASONS WHY ATTACK ON IT WILL BE VERY COSTLY FOR NORTH KOREA? How Japan Could Sink China's Navy in a War A new anti-ship missile promises to give a tremendous boost to the Japan Self Defense Force's ability to deter naval aggression. The missile, known as XASM-3, can travel at speeds of Mach 3, evading missile defenses to sink enemy surface ships. The missiles will be a significant worry for China, whose navy will have to sail within range of the missiles in order to reach the North Pacific Ocean. Traditional anti-ship missiles such as the U.S.-made Harpoon and French Exocet use rocket motors and turbojet engines to fly at subsonic speeds. The missiles are collectively known as “sea skimmers” due to their ability to fly as little as fifteen feet above the waves. The advantage to this low altitude flight is that incoming missiles are hidden from tar...

This is a training video made for Pacific Island artisanal fishers. It shows methods for postharvest processing of sea cucumbers. The video was produced as part of a research aid project funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR project FIS-2010-096), within the Department of Foreign Affairs, Australia. Hard copies (DVD discs) with voice-overs in local languages will be distributed to coastal villages in Fiji, Tonga and Kiribati. Sea cucumbers have been fished in the Pacific Islands for more than 150 years. They are processed, using artisanal methods, into a dried form called bêche-de-mer and exported to China. Harvesting and selling sea cucumbers gives rural households vital sources of income for basic needs, health and education. In many Pacific Isla...

The IHNC Lake Borgne Surge Barrier also called the Great Wall of Louisiana is a storm surge barrier constructed near the confluence of and across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet near New Orleans. The barrier runs generally north-south from a point just east of Michoud Canal on the north bank of the GIWW and just south of the existing Bayou Bienvenue flood control structure. Navigation gates where the barrier crosses the GIWW and Bayou Bienvenue reduce the risk of storm surge coming from Lake Borgne and/or the Gulf of Mexico. Another navigation gate (Seabrook Floodgate) has been constructed in the Seabrook vicinity where the IHNC meets Lake Pontchartrain to block a storm surge from entering the IHNC from the Lake.

A one-day conference examining trends in the threat environment and next steps for offense-defense integration. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Adversary missile forces represent one of the most pressing threats to the power projection capabilities of the U.S. military. Ballistic, cruise, and air defense missile systems can be used to hold U.S. bases and platforms at risk and deny the U.S. military access to and freedom of action within contested areas. Restoring the United States’ ability to operate within a denied environment requires a high degree of integration among offensive and defense capabilities, from stealthy aircraft that can penetrate enemy air defenses and strike time-sensitive mobile targets to air and missile defense systems that can protect U.S. forces operating in...

The CSIS Missile Defense Project cordially invites you to the launch of the report Missile Defense 2020: Next Steps for Defending the Homeland. In policy pronouncements over the last two administrations, the protection of the American homeland was regularly identified as the first priority of U.S. missile defense efforts. Homeland missile defense today is provided by the Ground-based Midcourse Defense program and other elements of the larger Ballistic Missile Defense System. The defenses fielded today have advanced considerably since limited defensive operations began in late 2004, but nevertheless remain too limited, too modest, relative to emerging threats. The Missile Defense Agency’s path to improve the system may require additional effort to stay ahead of even limited missile threat...
