The northern Sunshine Coast has been warned to brace for severe weather, with forecasters saying flash flooding is possible.
Mount Kanigan, north of Gympie, copped 56 millimetres of rain in just half an hour when a severe thunderstorm sprung up about 4.45pm.
That storm was predicted to make its way towards Rainbow Beach over the following hour, as a severe storm further south moved toward Noosa Heads.
The Bureau of Meteorology warned heavy rainfall, possibly leading to flash flooding, was likely.
"(It's) possible we could see some further showers and storms develop upstream but it's also possible they could be the strongest cells we see on the Sunshine Coast today," BOM forecaster Sam Campbell said.
He said there was still a chance of a storm throughout most of south-east Queensland on Saturday evening, particularly north of Brisbane.
But there was more likely to be gradually increasing showers into the evening and Sunday morning.
Those showers could continue through lunchtime on Sunday but would likely ease in the early afternoon, he said.
