Man fighting for life after freak driveway accident in Hervey Bay

  • 21 reading now

A man has been left fighting for life in hospital after being hit by his own car door, before hitting his head on concrete in Hervey Bay.

The accident took place in Saint Joseph's Drive at Urraween just before 11am on Saturday afternoon.

Sergeant Steve Webb from the Maryborough Forensic Crash Unit said a small dog in the car jumped into the passenger footwell.

The 70-year-old man in the passenger seat then opened his door and stepped out to remove the dog.

Police believe the driver's foot has then slipped off the brake causing the car to suddenly reverse. The man was knocked over by the passenger door, hit his head on the ground and was "very seriously injured".

"He doesn't look good," Sergeant Webb said.

"It's a terrible accident, people have to be aware that if they've got animals in the car, they need to be well and truly restrained."

"It's still under investigation, obviously, if he should die, a report will be prepared for the coroner."
