Melbourne weather: Say goodbye to Indian summer - the grey days are set to begin

  • 29 reading now

Melburnians should make the most of this weekend's summery conditions, which could be the warm weather's last hurrah before cold and rain bring a return to normal autumn conditions next week.

After an abnormally warm March, with day and overnight temperatures well above normal, grey skies will descend on the city on Monday.

Melburnians would have felt the autumn chill heading to work on Friday morning after a week of sticky, unseasonably warm evenings.

As a cold front moved through the state on Thursday, the warm made way for rain, strong winds and cooler temperatures.

After sweltering through Wednesday night, where temperatures hovered around 24.8 degrees – more than 11 degrees above the autumn average – the mercury on Friday morning had dropped to a cool 15.8 at 8am.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the chill factor made the temperature feel more like 13.5 degrees.

The chill would have come as a shock to Melburnians, with the city enjoying temperatures well above average all month.

The average minimum overnight temperature in March is 13.3, but this month has seen temperatures well above average.

So far this March, the average overnight temperature has been 17.4.

Luckily, there's one more weekend of summer conditions before next week's cold front brings at least four days of rain.

As clouds clear on Friday, forecast to reach 24, temperatures will soar back up to the early 30s on Saturday and Sunday.

The temperature will reach 32 on Sunday before a week of rain and clouds set in, bringing an end to Melbourne's Indian summer.

Melbourne has also been experiencing unseasonably warm days this month, with an average maximum of 27.8 – well above the long-term average of 23.9.

Next week is expected to see temperatures hover in the low 20s, with more mild minimums of 14 signally winter is unfortunately on its way.
