One dead and two people taken to hospital after multi-car smash on Calder Freeway

All lanes of the Calder Freeway have been reopened in time for peak-hour traffic, after a horror five-vehicle crash on Friday morning.

One person, who is yet to be identified, died and two people were taken to hospital after a truck ran over a car, crushing it, on the freeway at Taylors Lakes about 6.30am.

Fatal crash on Calder creates traffic chaos

One person has died in a multi-vehicle smash on the Calder as two separate car fires across Melbourne bring peak-hour traffic to a standstill. Courtesy Seven Melbourne.

Eight other people were treated by paramedics at the scene.

The crash forced the closure of the freeway ramp from Melton Highway to Calder Freeway, and all inbound lanes of the freeway from Kings Road. 

All lanes were reopened to traffic by 3.40pm.

The crash created traffic chaos and major delays in the area, with all three inbound lanes near Kings Road closed as emergency services assess the scene.

Cars were diverted by police at Kings Road to the Melton Highway and Western Ring Road. There are also heavy delays on the Melton Highway.

The accident comes during a horror morning on Melbourne's road, with two separate vehicle fires bringing the Western Ring Road and CityLink to a standstill.

Cars were banked up for several kilometres after a car caught fire on the Western Ring Road near the Hume Highway, while outbound lanes on CityLink were closed after a truck fire near the Burnley Tunnel.

Both roads have since reopened.

Footage from the scene in Taylors Lakes shows a large truck in the middle of the freeway with several heavily damaged cars scattered across the road.

The truck driver was taken to hospital for assessment while another driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed two men had been taken to hospital in a stable condition, one to Royal Melbourne and the other to Sunshine Hospital.

Friday morning's fatal accident comes after a horrific smash in Point Cook on Thursday afternoon which claimed the life of a 28-year-old Hoppers Crossing man after a truck collided with a number of cars on the Princes Freeway.

On Thursday evening another man in his 60s died in Tullamarine after his was struck by a rolling truck about 5pm.
