Big weekend, two days in Bathurst with friends at the races. Up and on the road for three hours drive to the NGA to see "Versailles ", then a similar drive back... to Sydney. The staff at NGA are so friendly and helpful, really a delight to interact. Almost like they can't wait for you to ask a question! Enjoyed our lunch and plenty of parking. The Exhibition? Delightful, so professional. Interesting commentary by Margaret Throsby on our headphones added to the experience. I would say you only get half the value without them. The wondrous tapestry, carpet, parquetry flooring ... fans and porcelain, stunning paintings .... the water movie backdrop to the fountain sculpt. It was breathtaking! Treasures indeed. Well done, NGA, and thank you so much. I look forward to your next big event.

I should add, perhaps, that we also took time to wander through the Australian artists, and delighted in the way the early, European trained painters never did quite manage to paint a decent facsimile of a kangaroo.

So much to see in Canberra.

We had a great time yesterday visiting the NGA.....we came from Sydney to visit the Treasures of Versailles Palace exhibition....which was absolutely fantastic........very well displayed.....and took us back in time to 2014 when we visit Versailles Palace itself. Great idea to have tha hardback Catalogue for sale.....we bought it and it will be a fantastic way to bring back all the memories of the Exhibition.
The staff at the Gallery was very hepful and friendly.
We definitely will be going back to visit the other exhibitions that are on at the Gallery like for example the Monet one.....that yesterday we didn't have time to go through it.

We had an amazing visit. We traveled 3 hours to get to Canberra but it was well worth the time. The gallery staff were amazing and helpful. And nothing was too ...much trouble. The Versailles Exhibition was better than expected. When I heard there were fountains and outdoor art I expected to be walking around outside in the rain but it was so well presented all indoors.
We just found that the gallery cafe was quite tricky to find, but definitely worth checking out

My Mum and I are visiting from England and had a lovely day visiting yesterday. We loved the Versailles Exhibiiton and seeing Monet, Degas, the indigenous and a...borigine exhibitions and sculpture garden. Our only suggestion (even though now in Autumn) is what about offering ice creams in the Street Café ....the weather here is still awesome compared to England's Winter and we really fancied a gelato. Staff all very helpful and polite so great experience. See More

Sadly I am allergic to the perfume they sprayed in the exhibition. Travelled for 3 hours to get there, had pre paid for my ticket and couldn't see the exhibitio...n.

Appreciate that the NGA tried to make it a total sensory experience but so many people are allergic to perfumes. Perhaps limit this kind of thing to a single room with warnings to the public

We visited the Versailles Exhibition today, WOW, LOVED IT. Having been to Versailles last June, it was terrific to see the art works up close, and to gain more... information about the Palace and artifacts. Lovely memories of our visit to Versailles came rushing back.

Lunch was fresh and delicious and the Cafe was light filled and seating comfortable.

Later we went to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art works, the size and detail of some of the paintings is incredible. It was lovely to see more contemporary art works by Indigenous Artists, we thoroughly enjoyed this section of the Gallery.

The gallery's architecture ceilings columns are a treat to the imagination. Thanks to many Australians who have collected Art and sculptures from all over the world and have made it possible for us to treat our souls. Must do the sculpture walk and sky dome at sunset.

Good experience but could be better if staff inside the exhibition wouldn't react too much about kids noises. Any move my child made with or without noise felt like staff were following me or watching me. Just a little uncomfortable as a parent. But overall we had a lovely time.

Loved the Versailles exhibition. We are frequent visitors to one of our favourite Canberra spots. I favour the use of the audio tour to totally focus on the pie...ces. Versailles only on until 17 April, so get in quickly. A well structured and layed out series of rooms showcasing furniture, carpets, embroidery, paintings and domestic pieces. There are special children's and Auslan tours available. See More

Really enjoyed our visit there. Came from Adelaide specially to see Louis XIV display. How wonderful to be so close and to be allowed to take photos of the grand pieces brought over from France.
Also walked every hall and floor, taking the brilliant works from various eras.

What a great exhibition Palace of Versailles is. Well worth the 2.5hr trip up from the coast. My only let down is the Parking. Very limited. We had to walk from Questacon. For a National Gallery I thought there would be more. It doesn't seem like it's accessible by Public transport.

Really good exhibition with a lot of well-renowned pieces. Versailles was also well explained by multimedia displays and staff were all very helpful. Only complaint was the sheer number of visitors on the second-last weekend, which is probably testament to how popular it was.

When visiting Canberra, I always visit the NGA. This time I joined the Gallery and I visited the Treasures of Versailles exhibition and thoroughly enjoyed it. I...t has to be one of the most outstanding exhibitions I have seen. So much so I bought the gold book - something I have never done in the past. The staff were very informative, helpful & friendly which made the visit an even better experience. Thanks NGA, until next time. See More

We came down from the Gold Coast to see The Treasures of the Palace exhibition ... It was just stunning, loved everything, the only thing I could say was, that ...I think the audio tour head sets should have been included in the entry fee.. I have travelled extensively in Europe and they are always part of your entry ticket. See More

In a leafy setting close to Lake Burley Griffin stands the National Gallery of Australia, a fine example of tasteful modern Australian architecture.

A major st...rength of this important gallery is its lack of clutter, allowing the visitor to absorb each work of art calmly and without distraction.

It is with pleasure that can we highly recommend the current visiting exhibition, namely VERSAILLES: TREASURES FROM THE PALACE, showing until 17th April 2017.

The carefully selected paintings, sculptures and furnishings allow the visitor to enjoy the closest possible experience of courtly life during the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Gallery is wonderful however the Versailles exhibition felt very cramped at times- not just from the volume of people going through but the rooms- they felt too small to house such grandiose pieces

In the words of Katharine Hepburn, ‘If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.’ This cheeky snap by British photographer Grace Robertson is a staff favourite from our collection. From all of us at the NGA, happy Fri-yay!

Like Claude Monet’s beloved 'Haystacks, midday', the NGA looks gorgeous bathed in autumn sunshine. Monet was fascinated with the effects of changing light, and painted these haystacks at least 25 times. This masterpiece is on display in our International Galleries on Level 2.

Hands on our hearts, we love this Papuan sculpture. Unearthed from the bottom of Lake Sentani in 1929, 'Double figure' was admired by the Surrealists, who nicknamed it Le Lys (The Lily). Visit the Dada and Surrealism Gallery to discover the extraordinary non-Western tribal art that inspired some of the most radical artists of the twentieth century.

King Louis XIV, France's 'Sun King' and the longest reigning monarch in European history. During his 72 years on the throne he brought absolute monarchy to its height, and was the chief architect responsible for turning the original hunting lodge and chateau at Versailles into the grand palace that it was to become. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to bring this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition to Australia, and we hope that you have enjoyed your experience of Versailles: Treasures from the Palace. Final day - exhibition closes today. Gallery open from 10am.

The Palace of Versailles was an architectural canvas constantly being expanded, developed and re-imagined. Find out the extraordinary story of this only recently re-discovered gate, the earliest piece of ironwork at Versailles and still with its original gilding, forgotten for two centuries in the walls of yet more renovations. Only at Versailles: Treasures from the Palace exclusive to Canberra. Final days! Exhibition ends 17 April.

An olfactory sensation worthy of a palace! Master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian has created a Louis XIV-inspired scent for the exhibition foyer. All the gilt, gold and glitter couldn't mask the smell at Versailles. With hygiene practices of the 17th Century not quite up to 21st Century standards, perfume was used as a way to mask the odour. Luckily this exquisite fragrance isn't used to hide anything! Last weekend for Versailles: Treasures from the Palace. Exhibition ends 17 April.

Chocolate in all its forms was popular at Versailles. Louis XV’s favourite drink was hot chocolate. The recipe has been passed down the ages. We bequeath it to you. Happy Easter. We are opening all weekend, including Good Friday, 10am - 5pm.

This life-sized portrait of the Sourches family was brought to Australia using one of the world's largest freight planes. It's so large that the original frame wouldn't fit on the aircraft and a replica had to be made here. Visit Versailles: Treasures from the Palace and look on at the sweetness of life during the reign of Louis XV. Final days! Exhibition ends 17 April.
