Two flight attendants were injured during turbulence on a flight as it approached Canberra airport on Monday night, Qantas has confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the airport at 10.15pm on Monday, where they were asked to attend to a cabin crew member with a suspected fracture.

The Australian Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating the incident, with the investigation set to take months.

A spokesperson for Qantas said the seriously inured flight attendant broke her ankle during turbulence on QF718 from Perth to Canberra.

The other flight attendant had only minor injuries with bruising to her knee.

"The crew were returning to their seats after preparing the cabin for landing when the turbulence occurred," the spokesperson said.

"All other customers were seated with their seat belts fastened."

The ATSB said as the Boeing 737 was on descent when the plane encountered severe turbulence before the fasten seatbelt sign was turned on with the two crew members injured when returning to their seats.

There were no other injuries to crew or passengers and there was no damage to plane itself.
