Nature notes
The first of the large trees is coming into leaf. This is the horse chestnut tree. Its large, sticky brown buds are splitting, and downy whitish leaves, still curled up, are breaking out of them. At first, the ring of leaflets of which the leaves consist are stuck together. However, very quickly the familiar hand-shaped leaves, with their six or seven fingers, will open out, standing up tall and bright green. It is quite a dramatic start to the spring. Eventually the horse chestnut leaves will reach more than 15in across. The elder bushes are already in good leaf in many places, their hollow grey twigs well covered, and many hawthorn trees and hedges are now looking very green. The leaf buds are swelling on other trees. On hornbeams, the long, thin buds are crinkling and showing little green cracks, while on young sycamore trees, the green and pink buds are getting conspicuously fatter. On oak trees, the small brown buds, many of which grow in clusters, are still tightly closed.
