Celebrating Ramadan with Noha Bahr’s Illustrations

To see more of the #Ramadan_NohaSketch series follow @nohabahr on Instagram.

“Many of my followers shared the same childhood memories of Ramadan as I did, so I decided to share them in a colorful way,” says 28-year-old art director Noha Bahr (@nohabahr) of her series, #Ramadan_NohaSketch. Noha uses illustrations and animations to show the month-long celebration through the eyes of five young characters. While they are fictional, many of the details are inspired by her life in Cairo, Egypt. “This animation shows a family gathering in the grandmother’s house — most of the furniture actually exists in my own grandmother’s home,” she says.

Photographing Cairo’s Contradictions with @owiseabuzaid

To see more of Owise’s images of life in Egypt, follow @owiseabuzaid on Instagram.

Owise Abuzaid (@owiseabuzaid) has his #EyesOn Cairo, “a city of contradictions,” according to the 23-year-old photographer who calls the ancient capital home. “Many historical places sit nearby newly constructed neighborhoods,” Owise says. “There are places that have kept their origins and others have completely shifted and Westernized.” Owise went to school for filmmaking and only started experimenting with photography five years ago. “I don’t think there is a difference between cinema and photography,” he says. “The only thing that matters is the story — and which format could be more interesting and effective in telling that story.” As for his images depicting life in modern Cairo, it’s always an adventure for Owise. “It is a very crowded and an insanely rushing city, which makes it hard to capture real street photography moments!”

Searching for Hidden Stories in the Side Streets of Cairo with @nourikam

To see more of Cairo’s hidden stories, follow @nourikam on Instagram.

Once a week on Saturday mornings, Nour Kamel (@nourikam) goes out in search of hidden gems in bustling Cairo. After spending two years in France and Spain, Nour, who’s 27, returned home with a fresh lens and a passion to rediscover her home city of 11 million. “I suddenly started to notice the bits that are unique to us — the colors, the windows, how we hang our laundry,” she says.

The Cairo most people experience is one that is crowded and loud, but Nour seeks out quieter streets with intimate surroundings that tell a different tale. “I like to find the sense of serenity that still exists,” she says. “I want people to see the Cairo that is least known to the world. That means a Cairo that is apolitical, a Cairo that lives in peace — where day-to-day activities happen smoothly, where there is charm and kindness and an extreme sense of home and hospitality.”
