El Salvador (i/ɛl ˈsælvədɔːr/; Spanish: [el salβaˈðor]), officially the Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: República de El Salvador, literally "Republic of The Savior"), is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America. El Salvador's capital and largest city is San Salvador. As of 2015, El Salvador had a population of approximately 6.38 million, making it the most densely populated country in the region. Its population consists largely of Mestizos of European and Indigenous American descent.
El Salvador was for centuries inhabited by several Mesoamerican nations, especially the Cuzcatlecs, as well as the Lenca and Maya. In the early 16th century, the Spanish Empire conquered the territory, incorporating it into the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1821, the country achieved independence from Spain as part of the First Mexican Empire, only to further secede as part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. Upon the republic's dissolution in 1841, El Salvador became sovereign until forming a short-lived union with Honduras and Nicaragua called the Greater Republic of Central America, which lasted from 1895 to 1898.

El Salvador Impresionante / El Salvador Impressive http://elsalvador.travel/impressive/en/ Today we will travel through El Salvador, a little great country that has a lot to show, so let’s not waste time and let's go to our first destination: Suchitoto, which is for me the great secret jewel of the colonial towns. This impoverished nation has become the murder capital of the world, and these gangs continue to have ties to the US.
Investigating allegations that private security companies are being hired to murder organised crime gang members.
El Salvador is set to eclipse Honduras as the country with the highest homicide rate in the world. There have already been over 5,700 murders this year in a country with a population of just over six million. El Salvador’s murder rate is now the highest it’s been since the end of the country’s brutal civil war — there is on average around one murder an hour. The staggering death toll follows the breakdown of a truce between powerful, rival gangs and the government. Police and military are now combatting the gangs head-on and, as part of its so-called "iron fist" strategy, gang members are being charged with a new crime — membership of a terrorist organization. VICE News correspondent Danny Gold headed to El Salvador to investigate what many are now calling a war between the street...

El Salvador's murder rate is now the highest it's been since the end of the country's brutal civil war — there is on average one murder an hour. El Salvador's youth have been hit especially hard by the plague of gang violence in the country. Gangs are recruiting younger and younger members, and 88 percent of schools have issues with gangs. Teenagers face forced recruitment, and many see their friends join for fear of suffering at the hands of the gangs. In this extra scene, VICE News correspo...

Gang violence in El Salvador seems to have no end. Police statistics say 23 people have died daily since the beginning of 2016. CNN's Jeremy Roth reports.
El Salvador has first murder-free day in two years Police in El Salvador said it had gone a full 24 hours without any murders, which is rare in a country that has been plagued by gang warfare. El Salvador has one of the highest murder rates in the world. So far, an average of 10 people a day has been murdered in the country, but last Wednesday no murders were reported. Most of the violence is caused by criminal gangs, which are known as Maras, and they operate across Central America. Police registered 99 murders during the first 10 days of the year. The year ended with 5,278 murders and the average was more than 14 per day. However, that was still 20 percent less than 2015. El Salvador has 81.2 murders per 100,000 residents. This is compared to England's homicide rate of about one i...

Avianca El Salvador, formerly Transportes Aereos del Continente Americano, simply known as TACA Airlines is an airline owned by the Synergy Group based in El Salvador. As TACA, it was the flag-carrier of El Salvador. As Avianca El Salvador, it is one of the seven nationally branded airlines (Avianca Ecuador, Avianca Honduras, etc.) in the Avianca Holdings group of Latin American airlines. TACA owned and operated five other airlines in Central America, and its name was originally an acronym meaning Transportes Aéreos Centroamericanos (Central American Air Transport), but this was changed to Transportes Aéreos del Continente Americano (Air Transport of the American Continent), reflecting its expansion to North, Central, South America and the Caribbean. On October 7, 2009, it was announced th...
Spanish/Nat El Salvador is waging war in the law courts against new businesses set up to launder drug money. The Central American nation, commended by the United States for its efforts to combat narcotics trafficking, has become a favourite state through which to invest drugs money. New legislation is being drafted to block the illegal flow of U-S dollars into Salvadorean bank accounts. Laundering drug money is big business in El Salvador. Speculation linking modern private enterprise to Latin America's international drug cartels is common. Proving it is another matter. El Salvador's legal system is often too poorly equipped to carry out the necessary investigations on companies which may be laundering money. But projects ranging from commercial centres to pri...
Spanish/Nat The sale of second-hand tyres imported from North America and Europe has become a prosperous business in El Salvador. Control regulations in the country are not as stringent as those in developed countries and the business now rivals the sale of new tyres. But ecologists are claiming that this influx is causing a catastrophe as tonnes of cheap tyres are being burnt in place of wood - emitting dangerous fumes in to the atmosphere. Second-hand tyres are big business in El Salvador. Tyres that are no longer legal or are replaced in North America and Europe are finding their way on to the streets of the country. The business is now so established that it rivals the sale of new tyres. However, its development has not been monitored or supervised and ecologists a...

The Perez’s made a modest, comfortable living as produce and bread vendors in a tough suburb of El Salvador’s capital. All of their children studied into secondary school – and some even into university – as the matriarch, 71-year-old Maria Luz Perez watched her family legacy stretch on. “All of my family – my parents, my grandparents, my great grandparents – were born and died in El Salvador,” she says, and then shakes her head. “But that all ended over a US$5,000 extortion.” It all began in mid-2015, when one of Maria Luz’s sons-in-law received a demand for a cash payment, the so-called “war tax” imposed by El Salvador’s brutal street gangs. He could not pay, so they murdered him. “We were living like animals, locked in the house, only ever opening the door to run out and get food.” ...

Juayúa is a municipality in the Sonsonate department of El Salvador. Juayua is a quaint little town up in the mountains, founded in 1577. The town's central plaza faces an old white cathedral that features a black Christ statue. This statue is a sister statue to that of the revered Basilica of Esquipulas in Guatemala and was carved by Quirio Cantano in the late 16th Century. The town has become a popular tourist attraction, locally and internationally due to its beautiful views and events, like the "Feria Gastronomica" the translation of which means "food festival".They have activities on the weekends and there is a coffee museum nearby. It is also gets really crowded with tourists on the weekends. Another one of Juayúa’s charms is the artist culture that the city boasts. The walls of the ...

A doctor in Central America is providing health services to those who lack access to them. The association she formed travels to rural communities in El Salvador to administer care and educate. For this week’s Game Changer meet the founder of the Salvadoran Association for Rural Health… Vicky Guzman. Access to medical care in rural El Salvador has always been a challenge. Roads in one of Central America’s poorest nations don't reach everyone. Isolation has contributed to increased poverty and mortality rates among people with preventable diseases. But back in 1972 Vicky Guzman set out to change that. Today, her organization is making dramatic improvements in the lives of thousands in the countryside.

Spanish/Nat Former street gang members in El Salvador have united to form a group offering health care and advice to violent gangs in the capital, San Salvador. Many members of the gangs, made up mostly of unemployed youths, grew up in the U-S after their parents fled the civil war in El Salvador. Having returned after the war, the youngsters brought the lessons learnt in the some of the crime-ridden cities of the U-S back to their homeland. 'Homies Unidos' hopes to help the youths find an alternative to their violent lifestyle. This is gang-controlled territory in San Salvador. But Claudia Reyes, better known as "La Guera", can move freely here because she brings medical care to the youths. She is welcomed by them because she also belongs to a gang. But "Homies...

Globe Trekker Megan McCormick travels to Barcelona in the Spanish region of Catalunya where she discovers a culture which prides itself on being different. With its sunkissed beaches, and Gothic palaces it’s an Olympian city worthy of the gods and the modernist capital of the world where some of the greatest artists on earth found their fame. First off, Megan travels back in time to the city’s “grey years” - between the end of the civil war and General Franco’s death – when there was a huge zest for change, to move on to a new era. It stoked the desire to transform the city itself, while the Olympic Games bid and then the Games themselves provided extra incentive, not to mention cash. The finest architects and urban planners were persuaded to take part in this vision. The axis upon which ...

Quatro amigos de longa data se unem para uma viagem a El Salvador.
July, 2012. We drive, twisting through the jungle – all sense of direction lost. No service. We pull into Punta Roca, a right hand point break. Weʻre here to surf a contest. Koa and I both lose, then drown our sorrows with ice cold coconuts and fresh fish. Food poisoning sets in, double vision. Hitch hikers with machetes, avoid any eye contact. Paranoia sets in, sure weʻve watched too much “GangLand” on History Channel. The pearly white gates open, an AK-47 bearing guard welcomes us with a smile. An oasis of life inside, we peer through a tropical forest – a lonely beach break spits in both directions. We retire to the villa, equipped with pools and maids; our safe house. The clouds turn black, swirl and rumble. Itʻs 4th of July, a bolt of lightning slashes through the clouds and exploding...

Finding inner peace, equilibrium, is a quest of a lifetime. For the two months I've been in El Zonte, El Salvador, I tasted that balance and i have brought it back with me. This is where the real trip starts: in your daily habits back home, applying and respecting what you lived, what you've learnt, what you've discovered. www.seekingfornewport.com
Did a shoot in El Salvador for this company called Compassion and decided to throw a compilation video together. Shot on 600D with Canon Lenses. Minor colour correction in Davinci.
In Feb 2012, I joined Movement NYC along with pro skateboarder Josh Harmony on a missionary trip to El Salvador. We spent the week helping out at Remar, a local orphanage down there, teaming up at a feeding program in San Diego, building/donating a skatepark to the city of La Libertad, and putting on a skate demo/contest for the kids down there. It was an incredible week with a group of awesome people. I've actually never made a fun travel video before so I thought it would be cool to film/put together a video summary of the whole ordeal. Enjoy! Music: Claudia Lewis by M83 http://movementnyc.org/
A girl cries in the early morning
Woken by the sound of a gun
She knows somewhere somebody's dying
Beneath the rising sun
Outside the window of her cabaña
The shadows are full of her fears
She knows her lover is out there somewhere
He's been on the run for a year
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Bells ring out in the chapel steeple
A priest prepares to say mass
The sad congregation come tired and hungry
To pray that trouble will pass
Meanwhile the sun rises over the dusty streets
Where his crowd gathers round.
Flies and mosquitoes are drinking from pools of blood
Where the boby is found
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Out on the ranch the rich man's preparing
To go for his morning ride
They've saddled his horse out in the corral
He walks out full of pride
He looks like a cowboy from one of those pictures
A president made in the past
Peasants in rags, the stand back for they know
That El Rico travels fast
Over the soul of El Salvador
A girl cries in the early morning
Woken by the sound of a gun
She knows somewhere somebody's dying
Beneath the rising sun
Outside the window of her cabaña
The shadows are full of her fears
She knows her lover is out there somewhere
He's been on the run for a year
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
