Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs publicly addresses Oscars blunder

"Beautiful". That's one way to spin the biggest blunder in Oscars history.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs has publicly addressed last month's live debacle, which saw the Best Picture prize mistakenly awarded to La La Land over winner Moonlight, calling the show's awkward wrap-up "a beautiful ending".

Jimmy Kimmel explains the Oscars blunder

It's what everyone is talking about, and the Oscar's host explains what happened.

"What I thought was so important was how in a matter of minutes you saw a humanity and a respect and a graciousness from the La La Land filmmakers and the Moonlight filmmakers in a way that I thought was very special," she said during a conference at SXSW.

"It all came together on a beautiful note and a beautiful ending."

Isaacs, whose shocked reaction following the mistake became a post-show meme, had previously addressed the error in a statement emailed to Academy members earlier this month, where she highlighted the "failure of PwC's accountants to follow established protocols and their delay in immediately remedying the situation."

Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, the accountants responsible for the envelope mix-up, were dumped by the Academy and later given bodyguards after receiving death threats over the bungle.

Isaacs, whose eventful tenure as Academy president ends in August, also used the SXSW conference to discuss the Academy's A2020 Diversity Initiative launched in the wake of 2015's #OscarsSoWhite controversy, which has seen the organisation open its doors to over 600 new members, almost half being women and people of colour.

"I have seen this door open a few times in my career," she said about the increased debate surrounding diversity in the industry, "and a goal of mine is that we don't let this door close this time."
