Open Door Books presents “Voices From Inside Women’s Prisons”, an event featuring
clips from a selection of films focusing on those incarcerated behind the walls of
women’s prisons.
This film screening seeks to foreground the voices and stories of individuals who
are incarcerated in women’s prisons – a population that is most often invisibilized
and silenced. Using segments from documentaries, we will explore the societal
causes and circumstances that have resulted in women being the fastest-growing
prison population in North America. We hope that through an examination of life
behind bars in women’s prisons, we will be able to stimulate discussion around
issues of imprisonment and punishment, and how these are affected by systems of
gender and sexual oppression.
