Laozi (also Lao-Tzu /ˈlaʊˈdzʌ/ or Lao-Tze) was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is known as the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching and the founder of philosophical Taoism, and as a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. Although a legendary figure, he is usually dated to around the 6th century BCE and reckoned a contemporary of Confucius, but some historians contend that he actually lived during the Warring States period of the 5th or 4th century BCE. A central figure in Chinese culture, Laozi is claimed by both the emperors of the Tang dynasty and modern people of the Li surname as a founder of their lineage. Throughout history, Laozi's work has been embraced by various anti-authoritarian movements.
In traditional accounts, Laozi's personal name is usually given as Li Er (李耳, Old *Rəʔ Nəʔ,Mod. Lǐ Ěr) and his courtesy name as Boyang (trad. 伯陽, simp. 伯阳, Old *Pˤrak-lang,Mod. Bóyáng). A prominent posthumous name was Li Dan (李聃, Lǐ Dān).
Laozi itself is an honorific title: 老 (Old *rˤuʔ, "old, venerable") and 子 (Old *tsə′, "master"). It is usually pronounced /ˌlaʊˈdzʌ/ in English. It has been romanized numerous ways, sometimes leading to confusion. The most common present form is Laozi or Lǎozǐ, based on the Hanyu Pinyin system adopted by Mainland China in 1958 and Taiwan in 2009. During the 20th century, Lao-tzu was more common, based on the formerly prevalent Wade–Giles system. In the 19th century, the title was usually romanized as Lao-tse. Other forms include the variants Lao-tze and Lao-tsu
The Tao Te Ching,Daodejing, Dao De Jing, or Daode jing (simplified Chinese: 道德经; traditional Chinese: 道德經; pinyin: Dàodéjīng), also simply referred to as the Laozi (Chinese: 老子; pinyin: Lǎozǐ), is a Chinese classic text. According to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, Chinese: 老子; pinyin: Lǎozǐ, literally meaning "Old Master"), a record-keeper at the Zhou dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated, although the oldest excavated text dates back to the late 4th century BC.
The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism, and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism, and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners, have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, and is among the most translated works in world literature.
Ching may refer to:
The Warring States period (Chinese: 戰國時代; pinyin: Zhànguó shídài) was an era in ancient Chinese history following the Spring and Autumn period and concluding with the Qin wars of conquest that saw the annexation of all other contender states, which ultimately led to the Qin state's victory in 221 BC as the first unified Chinese empire known as the Qin dynasty. Although different scholars point toward different dates ranging from 481 BC to 403 BC as the true beginning of the Warring States, Sima Qian's choice of 475 BC is generally the most often cited and popularly accepted one. The Warring States era also overlaps with the second half of the Eastern Zhou dynasty, though the Chinese sovereign, known as the king of Zhou, ruled merely a figurehead and served as a backdrop against the machinations of the warring states.
The "Warring States Period" derives its name from the Record of the Warring States, a work compiled early in the Han dynasty.
The political geography of the era was dominated by the Seven Warring States, namely:

The Tao Te Ching or The Way and its Characteristics is the primary text in Chinese religious history. Written by Lao Tzu roughly 600 years before the birth of Christ, the Tao endevours to articulate the core beliefs that underpin both Taoism and Chinese Buddhism. Second only to the Bible in its number of translations, the Tao's influence is hard to understate. A version of the text can be found in some form on every major continent and it has had a major mark particularly in the west. Though relatively short, this tome has inspired poets, artists, politicians and religious leaders alike with its direct language, practical advice and lyrical beauty. In this episode of Enlightenment Today we will explore the philosophy and wisdom of the original Taoist sage Lao-tzu. We will come to understand the way of nature (Tao) that Lao-tzu explained for us and what that means for us in our modern world. His wisdom is deeply embedded in the view that if we are to leave everything alone to follow its own nature, including human beings, then natural harmony and real government would come to fruition because we have learned how to trust the processes of nature without interfering with it. This process includes how we become an authentic individual, which Lao-tzu explains is a result of our ability to cease trying and to be humble and content with the way life is. Chinese philosophy originates in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States eras, during a period known as the "Hundred Schools of Thought", which was characterized by significant intellectual and cultural developments. Although much of Chinese philosophy begins in the Warring States period, elements of Chinese philosophy have existed for several thousand years; some can be found in the Yi Jing (the Book of Changes), an ancient compendium of divination, which dates back to at least 672 BCE. It was during the Warring States era that what Sima Tan termed the major philosophical schools of China, Confucianism, Legalism, and Daoism, arose, along with philosophies that later fell into obscurity, like Agriculturalism, Mohism, Chinese Naturalism, and the Logicians.

Theoretical Physicist Sabbadini presents the quandary of Quantum Mechanics, and draws illumination from Tao Te Ching. Ancient and primitive cultures conceived the whole cosmos as alive and sentient. The mainstream current of our culture has moved towards an ever greater separation of matter and mind and today’s dominant scientific world view is based on an essentially materialistic representation of reality, in which consciousness is considered an epiphenomenon of purely material process. Yet it can be argued that the obstinate persistence of the so called measurement problem in quantum physics is a symptom pointing to the need to radically rethink the way in which we represent reality. This talk proposes an understanding of the quantum measurement process in which the embodied nature of ...

In Milan he researched the foundations of quantum physics, focusing on the description of the quantum process of observation, a problem that keeps fascinating him up to the present. In California he contributed to the first identification of a black hole. In the 1990’s he was scientific consultant for the Eranos Foundation, an East-West research centre founded under the guidance of C.G. Jung in the 1930’s.
