Getting to grips with a new baby is hard enough without Mother Nature wreaking havoc on our bodies. And just when you think you have everything back on track, postpartum hair regrowth pops up – literally.

Oh, the glamour of motherhood!

One UK mum has been praised for candidly speaking about this side of motherhood. Rather than hiding her postpartum hair regrowth, author Giovanna Fletcher has photographed and shared it.

The wife of singer Tom Fletcher - and mum of Buddy Bob, 8 months, and Buzz Michelangelo, 2 - posted a pic of her new hair tuffs on Facebook, writing, "The regrowth - waaaah! I look like a troll!"

Other mums then began posting photos of their own postpartum hair regrowth in the comments, along with tales of hair dramas.

"I too am experiencing this! Not sure what's better, leaving handfuls of hair everywhere I walk or looking like I'm sprouting tufts of hair. No one tells you about all these lovely after effects of pregnancy do they?" wrote one commenter.

"Thank you so much for this post Gi! I thought I was alone with my tufts and constant clumps of hair loss. There seems to be no let up yet, especially as my bouncing seven-month-old boy doesn't realise it's attached when he pulls it!" wrote another.

Although it can come as a surprise to new mums, postpartum hair loss (and subsequent regrowth) is quite normal. And speaking to Essential Baby, dermatologist Leona Yip said that it can be alarming.

"This phenomenon is thought to be the result of a rapid drop in concentrations of the various pregnancy hormones at play after childbirth. But we still don't know which hormone or hormones exactly are responsible," she explains.

Fletcher isn't the first celebrity mum to talk about postpartum hair problems – in 2014, actress Selma Blair admitted that she suffered from hair loss three months after the birth of her son, Arthur.

"This is so not glamorous, but it's true: I need to take longer showers so I can collect the hair that falls out and throw it away so I don't clog the drain," she said. "Why do actresses never talk about that?"

At least with famous mums speaking up about the issue the rest of us know we're not alone.
