Once again, David Neiwert examines the dark corners of American conservatism and exposes the evil from which it derives its power. The first chapter, in which a young girl and her father are executed by "patriots," shook me like few other things I've read. From there, he careful tells of the rise of Shawna Forde in the militia movement and the media's complicity in turning her and the movement into American heroes.

One comes away from the book with a better understanding of the hate that drives such movements, and how such evil consumes those who embrace it. We see that in Shawna Forde, who now sits on death row, and in Chris Simcox--the national Minuteman leader who protected and defended her--who was arrested just last week for molesting children (for the second time by my count.)

Few people have spent as many years as Neiwert studying the extreme right, and mo one writes about the it as well as he does. Buy the book, and pick up "Strawberry Days," "In God's Country," and his other books as well. You'll thank me for it.

Apologies to those who came to read one of the General's reviews, his inner Frenchman got the best of him this time.

I've followed for several years David Neiwert's work in exposing and explaining anti-immigration extremist groups. This book combines a particular 'true crime' story with an in-depth look at the modern Minuteman movement.

The ‘her’ in this case is Shawna Forde and the hell she wrought was self-evolved from a young age. From a troubled life as an infant that eventually lead to teenage prostitution and more than a dozen arrests Shawna grafted and drifted through life until she found a belief, a desire that she could control and make her own, the protection of the borders of the United States at all costs.
Her very beliefs led to the down-spiral that her life evolved into and finally spiraled out of control. Heiwart introduces her to us as she and her band of ne'er -do-wells commitment a home invasion in the tiny Arizona town of Arivaca, murdering in cold blood the man of the house, his nine year old daughter and severely wounding and wife and mother. With broad stokes of description we are given a story that is as intriguing as any suspense novel, tightly woven around the facts behind this true-crime drama.
We are introduced to the Minuteman Project and given a superbly well researched history of history of the modern-day phenomena that sprung to new life after that fatal day that planes crashed into New York’s twin towers. And we are given a background on one of America’s last stalwart Wild West towns, the dusty burb of Arivaca, just twelve miles from the Mexico where a life of smuggling over the border, whether it was drugs or humans, is given a blind-eye or at least disregarded by the locals as normal for the region.
When the two elements finally combined they caused a combustible nativist explosion that led to a showdown from a private militia with the drug runners of area and blew wide open the true nature of a bigoted, psychopath and her delusionary hold on the border watching movement.

and realized when the shooting of a state representive, Gabby Giffords, there was a short story, on the news, about a child that was murdered also in Arizona, and the Latino people were asking why that wasn't being covered? why was there no outcry for this family? This book gives you all the details. It gives you background on all the people involved with this tragedy, and you just might remember some of them, others, hopefully you won't forget. This is a book that everyone should read and try and understand where this country might be heading. I usually sign off my reviews with "Kisses" but instead I will sign off "Be Well".

This book does double duty in investigating a terrible crime and following a social movement as it runs its course and implodes under the weight of the egos running it. I found the story of the crime and the events that led up to it both horrifying in their reality and fascinating in how it was dreamed up by one of the northwest's worst psychopaths. I also really liked how Neiwert links the mentality of those who perpetrated the murders and those who embrace the kind of social movement that became the minuteman movement. Excellent read.

This nonfiction book is a good read about the rise of The Minute Men in response to America's sad and stupid immigration policy. There are plenty of ego maniacs, hustlers and psychotics to keep you entertained. The book opens and closes with a home invasion and murders committed by the craziest and most dangerous Minute Men with a long treatise in between on the rise and failings of the Minute Man movement from a reporter who had been studying right wing groups for decades. Those sympathetic to right wing causes will find fault, as some members of my book club did not think the author offered a fair and balanced portrayal of the events and the movement. I didn't find that the case. I think The Minute Men's actions speak loud and clear: a bunch of yahoos with guns looking for attention, which they often get by getting on the news and sometimes acting criminally. The news media - especially CNN & FOX - come off looking like morons. I think the book should have discussed in more detail the failings of the US immigration policy (jail CEO's for employing non-citizens) and the steps necessary to end illegal entry which now kills over 500 people a year in the deserts of the southwestern US.
