Indian Ocean (band)

Indian Ocean is an Indian rock band formed in New Delhi in 1990, who are widely recognized as the pioneers of the fusion rock genre in India. Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty, Rahul Ram and Amit Kilam were band members till Chakravarty's death on 25 December 2009, after which Tuheen Chakravorty and Himanshu Joshi were officially inducted into the band as replacements. After the departure of Susmit Sen in 2013, Rahul Ram is the only founding member who appeared on the band's debut album Indian Ocean.

The musical style of the band can be at best classified as fusion music. It is an experimental genre, fusing raga (traditional Indian tunes) with rock music, guitars and drums, sometimes using Indian folk songs. It has also been described by some music critics as "Indo-rock fusion with jazz-spiced rhythms that integrates shlokas, sufism, environmentalism, mythology and revolution".

Since 2010, the band has moved against the lines of record labels. They released their latest album 16/330 Khajoor Road online for free. The main reason for this move was the frustration over negotiating contracts with record companies and fighting over copyright issues. They have turned to concerts and sponsorships for generating revenue rather than playing in the hands of record labels. For a brief amount of time they had the sponsorship of Johnnie Walker. They are also a part of the world's first Music Personalisation Initiative named DRP as one of the five Featured Artists. In its 2014 listing of "25 Greatest Indian Rock Songs of the last 25 Years", "Rolling Stone India" featured two songs, Ma Rewa and Kandisa from the album, Kandisa (2000).

Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is the third largest of the world's oceanic divisions, covering approximately 20% of the water on the Earth's surface. It is bounded by Asia on the north, on the west by Africa, on the east by Australia, and on the south by the Southern Ocean or, depending on definition, by Antarctica. It is named after India. The Indian Ocean is known as Ratnākara (Sanskrit: रत्नाकर), "the mine of gems", in ancient Sanskrit literature and as Hind Mahāsāgar (Devanāgarī: हिन्द महासागर) in Hindi.

Geography

The borders of the Indian Ocean, as delineated by the International Hydrographic Organization in 1953 included the Southern Ocean but not the marginal seas along the northern rim, but in 2000 the IHO delimited the Southern Ocean separately, which removed waters south of 60°S from the Indian Ocean, but included the northern marginal seas.Meridionally, the Indian Ocean is delimited from the Atlantic Ocean by the 20° east meridian, running south from Cape Agulhas, and from the Pacific Ocean by the meridian of 146°55'E, running south from the southernmost point of Tasmania. The northernmost extent of the Indian Ocean is approximately 30° north in the Persian Gulf.

Vicky Kaushal

Vicky Kaushal is an Indian film actor known for the award-winning film Masaan.

Early life and Career

Vicky is a Punjabi but was born and brought up in Mumbai. His father Shyam Kaushal is a Bollywood action director and stunt coordinator who has worked in films like Slumdog Millionaire, 3 Idiots and Bajrangi Bhaijaan among others. His brother Sunny Kaushal, is also associated with the film industry and has been associated as assistant director in movies like Gunday and My Friend Pinto.

Vicky graduated as an Electonics and Telecommunications engineer in 2009. He had job offers but as he aspired to become an actor, he got involved with theater. He joined an acting workshop under Kishore Namit Kapoor. He went on to do minor roles in films like Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana and Bombay Velvet besides a short film, Geek Out. He kept doing theatre, in the meanwhile, with the groups of Manav Kaul and Naseeruddin Shah among others.

In 2010 he assisted Anurag Kashyap on the two parts of the film Gangs of Wasseypur. Neeraj Ghaywan was also one of the assistant directors in the film. When Neeraj began to work on his film Masaan Vicky too was called for an audition. According to Neeraj, initially, he had apprehensions about Vicky doing the role of a small town Banaras boy because he came from a typical Punjabi background. But he got convinced about his ability after watching the audition.

Shweta Tripathi

Shweta Tripathi is an Indian actor. Shweta is best known for playing the role of Zenia Khan in the Disney Channel Original Series Kya Mast Hai Life. She also acted in an ad of Tata Sky download and McDonald's and most recently Tata Tea. Shweta Tripathi is known for her roles in films like Masaan and Haraamkhor.

Personal life

Born on July 6, 1985 in Delhi, Shweta Tripathi lived all her life in the capital city, except for the three years she spent living in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She did her primary schooling at DPS RK puram, New Delhi and graduated from NIFT, Delhi and then relocated to Mumbai. Shweta's off screen interests are photography and dancing. Design and traveling are the 2 things that she loves to indulge in every opportunity she gets. She loves spending time shopping for things to make her house as unique as it can get. She would love to have a home which is completely the 'Willy Wonka' way. She is a true lover of the Color 'pink'. Also an avid adventure junkie, Shweta loves to try new things to keep her adrenaline going. In fact, on a recent family vacation she developed a new passion for scuba diving and now she plans to further explore the mysteries of the sea by diving as often as she can. Shweta is a big foodie and nothing impresses her more than a lovely meal.

Masaan

Masaan (Crematorium) is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. The directorial debut film is an Indo-French co-production produced by Drishyam Films, Macassar Productions, Phantom Films, Sikhya Entertainment, Arte France Cinema and Pathé Productions. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival winning two awards. Ghaywan previously assisted Anurag Kashyap on Gangs Of Wasseypur.

Plot

Set in present day Banaras, the plot of Masaan follows two seemingly separate story arcs that eventually converge.

The first of these tells the story of Devi. The film opens with her and her fellow student, Piyush, checking into a hotel room. They are interrupted during sex when the police bursts in, accusing them of indulging in “indecent behaviour”. As the inspector records the barely clad Devi on his mobile phone, the boy locks himself in bathroom and commits suicide. Devi and her family are subjected to blackmail by the police, particularly one Inspector Mishra, who demands a hefty bribe from Vidyadhar Pathak, Devi’s father. While he struggles to fulfill his demand, she responds in a dignified manner to the 'stigma' forced on her switching jobs. She eventually gets a government job in railways in Banaras. Marred by the parochial mindset of people she leaves Banaras and joins a course in Allahabad..
